New Defender Owners - Is this true?
I was watching ASW's new video on the new Defender this morning and he says that it cannot be flat towed, or towed at all. It has to go on a flat bed.

Can't be, surely...?!!?

Is that from the owners manual?

So the transmission brake doesn't self-engage after 10 mins then?! I did think that a strange decision by LR if true.

I've owned several different brands that can't be towed and have to be in a flat bed. My understanding is that with any permanent all wheel drive system, you would run into the same problem. The last time for me was my wife's Audi A6. 20MY Defender 110 Fuji White

Not him again Rolling Eyes, I stopped watching him along time ago as he tends to spout a load of Censored , last time he made a claim about the new Defender a few people pointed out that he was wrong and even demonstrated he was wrong but he wouldn't back down. Cheers Ian

There are a lot of automatics you cannot flat tow either as the transmission pump is driven by the input side (engine) and thus towing starves the rotating parts of the transmission of oil.

So for longer distances you need to remove the propshaft. Lot of people do this in the US as they tow vehicles behind RVs

Also there is towing and towing. For instance you can place the front wheels on a dolly and let the back wheels roll. Not good for any permanent 4 wheel drive system!

I think to avoid all of that they say just put it on a car transporter. You know idiot proof advise and it is not their cost so hey.

I want to like ASWs vids, watched him for year, but it's stuff like this that discredits him. He clearly read the bit about disabling the park mechanism and then completely disregards it. Weird rantings. Nothing unusual in not be able to flat tow an auto long distances. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Not "any" 4WD system, for example there is no problem towing a Defender with an LT230 since it has a simple mechanical diff in the centre. It is generally a problem with modern clutch-based 4WD systems.

I imagine that the Grenadier can also be towed with the transfer box in neutral since although it has an auto box it has (as far as I know) a traditional transfer box.

Does this apply to the lt230 with a ATB center diff? Can it be towed?

My post from the "Overlanding" thread:

I still enjoy Andrew's vids every now and again - but he is anything but a technical expert. He knows his way around 4wd's and has obviously had more than a little experience in "vehicular travel". But he is no engineer and, what has put me off a little in numerous vids in the last couple of years, spouts off on tech topics that he has very little understanding of. And the worst is when he talks himself into a rage... I think assuming that, as an untrained individual, he knows more than a team of engineers at a major auto manufacturer is more than just a little presumptuous.

Topics that he's gotten completely wrong (that I've seen and remember off the top of my head) range from the aerodynamics of his Land Cruiser (hood scoop), the effect his roof conversion has on the CG of his LC, to solar electrics and the air suspension on newer Land Rovers - on which he was rebutted and proven wrong by at least 2 other YT channels.

All that said I still enjoy his content. But I don't consider his opinion on this topic as any sort of standard. See my post above too.

As far as whether or not the L663 is ideally suited to overland travel or not goes - I think the jury is still out on that one. Time will tell. Later Land Rovers were definitely suited IMO - especially if you had the proper tools ( Whistle ). But the MHEV adds another layer...

What I do not agree with is that the Grenadier is much more suited to this sort of travel than the Defender. The Grenadier is quite full of BMW electronics. My experience there has not been much different than with LR electronics.

Andrew's travel films are usually good but his rant videos are so often ill-informed. Like his early "review" of the L663 (which he'd never seen) and his claim that it couldn't be modified, based on a phone call he made during the video to his friendly ARB dealer, who hadn't seen the New Defender either.

I sometimes watch his rants to see if/when he's going to burst a blood vessel. Rolling with laughter Current vehicle: 2020 Defender 110S
