Hello
I’m looking to get suggestions for if there are any alternatives to the foam type 3 piece seals for a defender hardtop. The ones that go on top of the tub rail? As the prices seem extortionate. One possibility is to use a s3 seal as that is significantly cheaper? Any recommendations? Cheers |

Where are you looking, and what prices have you seen so far?
YRM do their own foam insert at £110 for the pair. Its not cheap (nothing for a defender is) but I guess its cost vs the risk of an alternative not working. If you were interested in the YRM, they can be found here: https://yrmit.co.uk/product/side-panel-to-...n-hardtop/ |

I wouldn’t recommend the genuine seals. I changed mine and they are as it shows on the YRM website, different to the originals.

May I ask if these are possible to install without removing the side panels or any other body part? Do they just need to be pushed in place from outside or ?
I am tempted to replace mine as they have stopped performing any type of sealing action many moons ago. /Mat |

Hi Matt,
At a minimum you would need to unbolt and lift the sides i believe as the weight of the side panel would prevent anything from being pushed in. By the looks of things, the seals are bigger than the gap until they get compressed too. I am yet to do mine, but that's what I am expecting to need to do as a minimum (though I will likely also replace the cappings for YRM Galv at the same time - meaning sides out completely!) |
