Which is the best Independent suspension setup?
Mostly just curious as I find these things fascinating.
Land Rover have offered 3 main types of IFS/IRS fully independent suspension systems (excluding things like the Freelanders/Evoque/DS).
Thinking along the lines of the:
-L322 Range Rover
-L320 RRS & Disco 3/4
-JLR D7u (under the L494 RRS, L405 RR, Disco 5 and new Defender)
Excluding the new L460 RR/L461 RRS platform as it is too new and expensive to really be used off road by many.
I've recently been watching some YouTube videos about Toyota IFS, which have been very informative and interesting.
I'd certainly recommend checking out their channel and other content if you have an interest in such things.
Anyhow, it got me thinking. How does Land Rover compare in this department? We all know that live axle models already have great suspension travel, flex and performance from the factory. And that they are super easy to get more from for fairly cheap.
Independent suspension on the other hand is much harder to increase travel and articulation from. So I was wondering if anyone had any figures or side by side comparisons of the different suspensions offered from Land Rover compare?
I know the vehicles (often thanks to the traction systems) can and do perform very well off road. Just curious on how the different setups compare to each other and to setups like Toyota, Ford or Chevy. The latter two both offer long travel suspension on some of their more purpose built off roaders.
I've seen a few videos of the new Defender getting hung up on the lower control arms.

And you can see with the suspension extended they do cause a low point, not sure how this compares to a D3 lower control arm?
