New ECU Won't Start TD5 Engine on a Defender
Hi guys

I had a problem with my defender. It is a 2004 2.5 TD5 with alarm. Non ABS and Non central locking.

Whilst driving I noticed the gauges on the instrument started to flicker. The vehicle later stopped and won't start again. an electrician checked the wiring and got it to start again but with injector 4 failing to fire. I bought a new ECU and a hawkeye diag tool. I have entered the injector codes in the new ECU. However the car won't start. The fuel pump wont even run when you switch the ignition ON.

I fitted the old ECU and the car started but with injector 4 opened circuit fault reading from the hawkeye tool.

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong.

Many thanks in advance Confused

It's not something simple like a fault in the injector loom, even though you're getting readings it might be worth eliminating that.

Depending on the ECU you will need to make sure you have the correct fuel map loaded so that it runs correctly but the reason it won't start is that you need to code the immobiliser with a tool such as Nanocom.

If you were closer I would do this for you no problem.

Is it possible to code the immobilizer with the hawkeye diagnostic tool? I just bought the small handheld type. Can the fuel mapping be also done with the hawkeye tool? If so can you kindly send me the steps?

Regarding the harness, I replaced the harness with a brand new one, yet the Old ECU keeps reporting Injector 4 opened circuit fault. This is why I decided to replace the ECU. I was of the opinion that the opened circuit fault was from the ECU.

The new ECU will need programmed, and security codes learned before it will start Thumbs Up

As above, needs to be paired with the AS10 module to start as well as the injector codes Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I have coded the injectors already in the ECU using the hawkeye tool, How can I pair the alarm with the ECU?

I've not used a hawkeye tool so can't assist further I'm afraid. Perhaps a word with one of the site sponsors may be helpful? Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Any TD5 ECU will run the engine, at least for short test. But it must be paired with immobilizer. In Def it is AS10, in Discovery 2 it is BCU. Without this pairing, starter motor will run, but engine ECU will be not controlling injectors and so no fuel.
Fuel pump is controlled by engine ECU, and after switching the ignition on, fuel has to start working.
Check wires and connector between engine ECU, engine and relais.
I had similar problem and found corroded and partly melted connector headers behind the dashboard.
In RAVE there is detailed description of cables, connector, wire colors. With detailed placement in car and pictures. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I have same problems.

But when the AS10 is deactivated in ECU - then it is not necessary to pair them, isn't?
Also when the injector codes are not correct the engine should start for short time!?

It is possible to modify TD5 engine ECU to remove the need for 10AS (or BCU in Discovery2) pairing. And injector codes have only influence on the smoothness of engine run. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Ok, but is it the same when the AS10 will be deactivated with the original LR T4 tester or LR testbook? Or is the full deactivation of AS10 only possible with the Byte-Hack?

It is not enough to deactivate it in 10AS. You need to go inside the TD5 engine ECU, reprogram (desolder, clear, program, solder back) the small configuration EEPROM memory and cut wire between TD5 ECU and 10AS (best inside the TD5 ECU).
After that, the TD5 ECU will not longer look for 10AS. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

For that amount of effort to bypass the 10as, it's easier to invest in a nanocom. Beside you can add central locking once you can program the 10as. So no reason to get rid of that.

1. The ecu will need to learn the security code.
2. The ecu must not be immobilised. It's possible that the ecu is immob but the 10as is not and the engine with lightning symbol will not show on the dash. You can query it with a diagnostic tool.
3. The engine will start with any td5 ecu once all the above are met. However, the injector code should be programmed for optimal performance. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth.
