All the geuine adds I see for Defenders over here are asking crazy high prices for them.

I've not seen these ads, but in my experience 5000 isn't going to buy much over here. Second hand cars hold their value in France. If you are seeing decent Defenders for that money then its got to be a scam. That one is certainly un peu hookey, since as far as I know the French word for white is not "orange", so the vehicle in the photos isn't the one described.

Spent last year looking at French registered LHD Defenders and didn't come across one that wasn't a good 20% more than an equal RHD UK plated one. Some much more than that and I went UK reg in the end.
Came across lots of scams, the type you see on ebay in the UK - they don't do cars on eBay France so they try on other sites. Keep clear. |

Personally I'd rather pay the extra for LHD. RHD over here in mainland Europe drives me potty. Cant see at junctions, cant see to overtake, cant reach the ticket machines or pay for the fuel, have to get out and walk around annoying the impatient Frenchman behind
OK that last one may be worth it

Ah, but that's only possibly true at 50% of the junctions...the other half you have a better view! Plus there is the advantage that a Frenchie skipping the give way to the right rule while you are the one coming from that direction is going to make contact with the passenger side (perhaps not that great if you have a passenger I'll admit).
You know about the télépéage right??? Also works in most parking lots these days  |

Hello. so I can do this with the volant on the english side. No problem because we are high and for working I am not on the roads so I like the difference to the normal french car.
If you buy a french occassion Land Rover now then you will pay lots more than you will if you going to england to do. The pound is weak for the euro and the choice is best. The english also make better the maintaining of the land rovers with specialist servicers all the towns. For this moment I say to you better not take a french one and take an english one like me. Beware if you are bringing a Defender 90 County HT over to France from the UK. If its vehicle category (J on the V5) is N1 then the vehicle is only legal with two seats here (driver and passenger), even thought your original UK V5 shows 4 seats in the UK. I bought my 4 seater over here and registered it in France. The Carte Grise (equivalent the V5 in the UK) came back stating that it was registered as having two seats. This stems back the the original vehicle conformity certificate issued by Land Rover, to which they get their information. The conformity certificate cannot be changed in France and therefore, if you have an MOT here, you will be told to remove the extra seats or you will fail your MOT according to new regulations being enforced this year.
We use(d) the Land Rover with bikes on the back to get to the mountains, where my wife drops my friend an I off and picks us up later, on a regular basis, so I need to resolve this. I have been through the administration process (lengthy) here and met with the equivalent of the DVLA here lats week. The guy was very pleasant and could see no reason for the change of category from his personal point of view but, he has to be guided by French law, which is fair enough. So it's a 2 seater in France if the Vehicle category is N1. Full stop! The only solution left for me is to return my Defender to the UK and buy one that was registered originally as vehicle category M1 (described as a station wagon) and register that here. Expensive but it is the ideal vehicle for our purposes. So, selling my very nice 2007 2.4 Puma 45000 miles only, legal with 4 seats in the UK! |

Yes, you can not make this modification in France - the seats must be original fitted when leave the factory. You would not get at all insurance in France for this modification even if the carte gris could change.
The police sometimes will watch for car with utility version insurance but with rear seats. They get you for that. |

Hi. I am new to this forum .. I’m looking for some advise , I am thinking of selling my Defender here in France, ( I’m keen to buy TD5) my local garage gave me a valuation which seems surprisingly high! ... I have looked at a couple of Sites like the Mobile and la Bon Coin and the values vary enormously..Where would i get a realistic value...I do not want waste time with it advertised at the wrong price.

Perhaps a slight drift away from the original theme (or not?) but VERY relevant for me…
I’m spending more and more time in France, BREXIT might well be oblige me take the Titre de Séjour route and remain out of the UK for 183 days per year. My truck is a 2011 Left-Hand-Drive LWB CSW, “7 seats including driver†BUT Vehicle Category N1. So are you saying I couldn’t get it registered in France other than as a 2-seater? Or get a good price from a dealer? I’ve a rather nice 4-seater Morgan in the UK that I now hardly use, my options for French long-term use are: (i) Flog the Morgan in the UK and register the Defender here; (ii) Flog the Defender in the UK - or in France if there’s a better price to be had - and try to get the Morgan registered here; (ii) Flog ‘em both and buy locally from a French dealer who can worry about registration (new “Defenderâ€, Jeep, T-Roc Cabrio, Jimny poof’s car, whatever…). Your thoughts welcomed, and if anybody can help with the formalities of getting a UK vehicle registered in France (like I said, either Defender or Morgan, both have a plus and a minus) please pm. A Morgan contact in Normandy has offered to assist, but a little far from me down near St Tropez. Peter ps. I have a Certificate of Conformity for the Morgan, but not for the Defender |
