Some help buying used please...
After a looking around the showroom yesterday my wife has decided a used Defender 110 is ideal for her next, obviously I am encouraging this purchase!. Problem is I have no clue on the engines and spec we should be looking for within the budget £65k.

Used 110's are thin on the ground here in NI but this one below is available, with a BMW dealer I have bought from before. Only negative I can see from is it the lack of full leather. I think is was the LR demo but is it worth a look?

Not sure on the market in NI, but it looks pretty well specified.

I didn't see adaptive cruise control (which I find really useful for longer journeys).

Not wanting to fear monger, but for your information: The D240 engines did have some concerning issues upon launch and were quite quickly discontinued and moved from 4 cylinder D200/D240 to 6 cylinder D250/D300s. I read various stories about the issue, but I understood that the DPF may have been part of the issue, so be careful if this is primarily for shorter journeys.

Of course, give LR a shout and see if you can get extended warranty for your ownership timeframe. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable without some form of warranty coverage on any vehicle of this value.

The most obvious thing is that it's an earlier and less desirable 2.0l 4 pot rather than the later 3.0l 6 and the badge suggests that it's an SE.

The description is somewhat hilarious as it declares that it is LESS roof rack or rails, despite them being clearly visible, and that it has a body coloured roof, which isn't Rolling Eyes Darren

Its a BMW dealer trying to sell something they don't know much about to be fair but a very good dealership here.

Glad I asked to get the info on the engines though Thumbs Up Andy

Maybe track down something like this? It will be used daily on short runs.

I understand what you're saying but the two things I picked out are so blindingly obvious that it's clear that somebody wasn't paying attention. Whilst mildly amusing on their own, I'd be asking myself if they'd messed up on anything else and reviewing the rest of the spec carefully to make sure it's as expected. Just from reading posts on here, it's clear that LR options are a minefield, unfortunately. Darren

The options are definitely very much a minefield. In 2022 we've seen MY22, MY23 and MY23.5 models delivered due to the supply chain issues.

Take a look at the fabric sections of the seats - it was also a bit of a problem for earlier models during launch, as the fabric they used was pretty prone to water staining. Something a good steam clean could probably resolve, but likely will come back without some form of fabric protection treatment. Plenty of threads around on this topic.
They subsequently moved to a 'ROBUSTEC' fabric (which has little pleather dots in the pattern) which is an improvement on the older fabrics. It looks like this add has the older - more stain prone fabric.

On the plus side, the older models had better base specs. I see this model has an interactive drivers display - not guaranteed nowadays but desirable, and the 'clear sight' video mirror - pretty rare in today's specs. Even air suspension has been cut from the base specs for MY23.5 So there are some advantages to the older models.

I would recommend looking around for an early D250 - which seems to have had less issues and a more robust 3.0l engine (the block is being used in models between 250hp up to 350hp in the new RRs so probably a little over built/under utilised in D250 guise). OR at least use this as a bargaining tool to get a bit of money off.

I’ve been running a D240 First Edition 110 since June 2020 and mechanically it has not had any issues whereas I’m about to take delivery of a D250 where there have been some well documented issues with belt tensioner brackets and chaffing on air intake hoses. My D240 now got 21000 miles on it and has had additional oil/filter changes at 11000 miles/ 12 months as well as the LR scheduled 21000 miles/ 2 years. i have used how it was intended to be used and had it Clear Gloss wrapped very early in its life to protect the paint. It’s been one of the best LR products I’ve owned, 2C problems apart!
Where I have had issues with mine has been to do with dire quality control at the factory - it’s been back to the workshop 15 times for rattles and rainwater leaks into the cabin through the rear offside door trim and around the windscreen. I also had the rear screen washer line come adrift inside the A Pillar trim filling the driver’s footwell with screen wash water.
If you can find one then there was a short period of production of D250 First Editions and they are quite rare but still have all the no-cost extras on them that now many are discontinued or optional. Pre 2022 110’s should have air suspension as standard, coils were an option at no cost thought.
Even rarer if you want it is to find a D240 with the rear ediff. First Editions were very popular as they were good value for money and LR stopped making them after the 1st 12 months of sales but then produced an XS model with almost all the toys of the First Edition but also the restricted colour choice and they added body coloured lower trims which aren’t to everyone’s taste and look better in some of the colour ways than others. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

Thanks for the info.

After some testing she now feels the 90 is plenty and likes this one. Ideally we would want a Carpathian grey d250 with vintage tan but more chance winning the lotto tonight than finding a used one.

How long have you waited for delivery? What do you think that one is worth? Andy

9 months wait reduced from 18 when I ordered last May, but I already have a 2020 110 that it will replace so i wasn’t in a hurry for delivery either. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
