Yep another oil question.
Has anyone used 10w-40 semi synthetic in a series 111 with the 2.25 diesel engine? I have always used 15w-40 mineral oil but with the last cold spell I was wondering if the 10w-40 semi synthetic might be better for those first cranks on very cold days. No difference in the price for the oil. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

as it has flat tappets, make sure the ZDDP is above 1000 ppm (So API CI4). 15w40 is suitable down to -25C and 10w40, down to -30C. Puma 110" SW

Does the 2.25 diesel have flat tappets? The petrol does not. Still high zinc content is going to be beneficial as an additive.

On my 19J engine (which is not much different than your 10J), I always used 15W40 mineral oil.

But for my old VW diesel, I have always used 10W40 semi synthetic and that thing has lasted.

So I have decided to use 10W40 on the 19J, but still have to see long term (I only started it for a couple of seconds since the engine rebuild - but even so, what is long term on a vehicle with occasional use?).

Mind that the ambient temperature here is a bit higher than at your location. Winters can go to about 10dC, summer will be mid 30s. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Shouldn't that be 20W50 according to the manual? “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

I did top up with 10w-40 semi synthetic but it seemed to clog the breather filter on top of the engine, so I just use 15w-40 mineral. I used to use 20w-50 but the handbook says that 15w-40 can be used. I just use the basic stuff and all is well. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The handbook for a series 3 Land Rover was probably written based on oil technology from the 60s or possibly earlier. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I agree as the specs listed for the oil have long been superceded. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The owner manual 2.25 santana diesel on a SIII recommended 10W40 api CC. Neither CD, nor above.

I am currently using Valvoline which has a CF classification. Very difficult to get anything with a lower rating.
CD Obsolete CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel-powered automotive engines built after 1994.
CC Obsolete CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel-powered engines built after 1990
CF Obsolete CAUTION: Not suitable for use in most diesel-powered automotive engines built after 2009. Later “C” category oils are usually suitable or preferred for diesel automotive engines for which “CF” oils were specified. Older equipment and/or two-stroke diesel engines, especially those calling for monograde products, may however require “CF” category oil 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I have checked both Morris and Westway and their mineral 15w-40 is to a higher spec than CC/CD spec . 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

One carries 40 monograde CC and the other 10W40 CC.

Back in those days our SIII used Ursa monograde 40 api CC all year round from -5 up to over 30C. Puma 110" SW
