Ok, so I’ve been chasing a rattling type sound for a while now. Not sure how it comes across on your speakers etc, but it’s a metallic type tapping/rattling.

Poorly fitted cheap alternator replaced with new Denso unit. New belt tensioner. Noise remained. Found a bit of play in the water pump and power steering pump, both original to the best of my knowledge so decided to replace both with new OEM units. Noise remains. I’m stumped. Only thing left is crank damper, but with a bar on that it doesn’t have excessive play, no squeaks on shut down, and this noise goes away as the engine warms up. After some pondering I’ve concluded it HAS to be the crank damper.

YEs that sounds like the harmonic can damper. When it gets that bad it is because the rubber damping material has parted company with the metal allowing the two halves of the damper to clack against each other.
It is not a bad job, but you do need a BIG torque wrench and lever to get the bolt off and back on again. There is a good How To on Discovery 2's website http://www.discovery2.co.uk/CrankPulley.html |

Success it was the crank damper.

investing in the correct locking tool for the engine, can make life that much easier. when i did the head gasket on the Kseries engine, Locking it at the flywheel made a massive difference in helping me undo the crank pully. I know its the extra cost and another step to lock the engine, but its worth it to help things out Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it! |

Yeh, also bought the tool to set the front crank seal to the right depth. Running this thing in Canada means I’m on my own so need all the help I can get to do things right! 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

i owned a rover metro, and somethings you were on your own, like the suspension. So i was my own support. me and my dad have learned a lot from the rover metro days, we now get the proper tools in, and replacement bolts a long with the parts. We have had simple jobs turn into a right nightmare! But we have had jobs that should have been a nightmare work out like a dream. ( fuel pump on mine, was supposed to have been a pain, but as soon as the seals etc were settled. We were laughing.
