The same happend to our 130 TD5, but it lasted for about 10 km, before the driver recognised some unusual noise. Starter solenoid was stuck and starter was running all the time. Mechanical part of the starter was OK, but rotor and brushes were worn out and partly burnt. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

There was a TSB for the Puma for a similar problem where the starter switch on the column would fail to de-energise the motor.

Thanks all, comforting to know I’m not alone 😀. Not something I had heard of. Garage confirmed starter motor is toast. New one ordered so another job for next week.
