Starter motor won’t disengage???
Wife started the Landy to drive home this evening and said it was making a terrible racket. She got a few 100m down the road and loads of noise and smoke so pulled over. Real smell of burning. Just looking at it now and wires seem melted from the solenoid to the starter motor. Is it likely the starter motor failed to disengage, hence the noise, and then it overheated and burned the wires?

Anyone had experience of this?

Also how easy is it to change the starter motor on a 300Tdi?

Cheers

The same happend to our 130 TD5, but it lasted for about 10 km, before the driver recognised some unusual noise. Starter solenoid was stuck and starter was running all the time. Mechanical part of the starter was OK, but rotor and brushes were worn out and partly burnt. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

There was a TSB for the Puma for a similar problem where the starter switch on the column would fail to de-energise the motor.

Thanks all, comforting to know I’m not alone 😀. Not something I had heard of. Garage confirmed starter motor is toast. New one ordered so another job for next week.
