Your memory serves you well Steveww, for your pleasure https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic79934.html
Opps, misread, thought you were referring to engine oil dipstick, not a dipstick for the gearbox, which is an interesting idea. |

I remember seeing something like what you described watching the oil change videos of off-track family on YouTube.
They used an L-shaped metal thing that they made. They filled the gearbox with the required 2.2L of GL-4 gear oil then put the metal in, pulled it out, then marked the level on the metal. Now when they check the levels on the gearbox, they just stick the metal in and see if the oil and the mark on the metal meet. I hope this helps. Last edited by HardCharger on 26th Jun 2023 2:20am. I did monitor my oil level in the gearbox, as I had an oil leak and was unsure if it was the TC or the Gbox. IIRC, the level was about 70mm from bottom edge of one of the plugs after I refilled with 2.2 liters. I used the forward plug as is more accessible. Unsure if the 'fill' plug and the plug I used are at the same height or not. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Has any one discovered a way to check the oil level of the gearbox, without draining it?

Series Ones and probably early series twos were fitted with gearbox dip sticks! A great idea no doubt removed by the bean counters. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond..... |

If it wasn't so vulnerable to catastrophic damage, a clear tube between the drain plug and the fill plug would give a good level.
Is there by chance a plug of any kind in the box, located below the level of the fill plug, but well above 'dangerously low', that could be replaced with a sight glass of the flush, screw-in variety? |
