Not far from me some picnic benches and seats have been set up along with some pulling in spaces along the coast. I go down with my binoculars and see what's going on. I was down this week and it was a pretty exciting day. There was lots going on.
A heron was standing in the shallows doing what herons do when I noticed two gulls diving down and harassing the heron. The heron kept ducking the diving gulls and occasionally snapped back at them. A third gull joined the attack and the heron was forced to move. Even in flight the heron was harassed until it moved about a hundred yards down the bay. There were some cormorants on a sand bank with outstretched wings, drying them. There was a little boat with two rod fishermen in it. There was also the odd leaping trout, so as you see it was all kicking off and a very exciting day by my standards. So I was busy taking all of this in when I heard a tourist bus pulling up but I kept on looking at the action. The bus disgorged it's contents which appeared to be American tourist. A woman from the bus apologised for intruding but I said there was lots of space. Most were elderly and some started looking at the stones and sea weed when someone asked "How old is your truck?" The 1992 110 200 tdi was parked in the bay near me. "31 years old I replied" A few of the tourist, both male and female were examining the "truck", so I went over to them. I explained that she was made in 1992 as a pickup, I bought her in 1996 and had her converted to a station wagon. This seemed to impress them so I showed them how the basic architecture of the vehicle lent itself to this and showed them how everything bolted together. Much impressed they were with the sheer simplicity of the concept. One man had worked on aircraft so was interest in the rivets and the aluminium used. By now there was no one looking at the stones or the seaweed they were all around the 110 taking lots of photos, probably of yours truly aswell. But what really made their day was when I demonstrated the humble removable interchangeable front seat bases. They thought this was nothing short of brilliant. Anyway it was only a brief stop so they had to go but a few, both men and women said they would like to stay and talk more but the bus was ready to go. Anyway it was an action packed day as you can well imagine. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Funny when you think that the Series was inspired by the Jeep that Maurice Wilks used extensively, and was so impressed with, on his estate in Anglesey.
Old, quirky, cars (and classics) always bring people together to have a chat. I’d also forgotten how nice the Defender wave is - another pleasant part of being back behind the wheel of a 90. |

To the average American, 200 years is positively ancient.
Therefore a Defender that is 30 years old is 15% of that timeframe and therefore up there with the Pyramids based on the length of time of modern man. No wonder they were impressed. The question is Spudfan, did you tell them your age, or did you fear that you would end up stuffed and mounted in a glass display case……. |

They should try meeting my Mother-in-Law if they're impressed with things that are only 200 years old! Dirty Deeds - Done Dirt Cheap |

I like to think they were wondering if I was old enough to drive such a machine but were too polite to ask 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

funny thing was, one of the lasses who worked in the offices, was parked next to my defender, ( lovely woman mind, one that i could have as a wife) She saw me having my break in it, she came over and said, " i was wondering who owned this! i was thinking this has to belong to one of the top managers" i said now you know Laugh is, what the top managers own, they own mercs and jags, one actually ones a MGB which has the wire wheels with chrome bumpers, in British racing green. He Loves my defender to pieces, and we could chat for hours about motors! He actually came straight up to me and asked where it was, when the fuel pump packed up, and was the 1st to see my new wheels before i put them on. He said that those to set them off! Two supervisors actually drove them in the army too, and said those are the best motors to drive, one wants to look into owning one too, for a family holiday motor.
