Idle rattle

I have a rattling sound that often appears after braking to a halt and idling, such as when stopping for a streetlight. It is intermittent, but disappears when the auto stop kicks in, i.e. turning off the engine. It does not appear when I start the car parked, or when idling in park, or when moving forward, regardless of speed. Sounds like it's coming from somewhere in the front of the vehicle, but it is hard to discern when standing outside the car, as opposed to inside the cabin. It does not seem to fit the pattern of other rattle problems that have been discussed on this forum. Any thoughts about the cause or where to investigate? I can always have it checked under warranty, though it will likely take a while to get an appointment.

Have a look under the bonnet for anything that could be rattling, heat shields, cables, and similar.

If it’s a D240 then it could be the timing chain. A known issue that leads to very expensive engine replacement if not caught.

I heard it on my daughter’s DS and called LRA who diagnosed it and had it booked into the dealer within the week under warranty. Apparently it bypasses the normal process.
