Hi John, by the by, before fitting you should make up a reinforcement bracket for the inside of the crossmember, as those bolts pop through eventually. Or maybe the have updated them
I have two steps I found on the road, and the left of mine is just starting to pop. Another job to do. https://www.defender2.net/gallery/displayi...;pos=-5397 08 Puma 90xs BMW R1150R KXF250 Keep On Truckin |

Sorry Zag,
No I meant MartinK. I'd never seen one of these towball-mounted steps before, and after seeing this thread yesterday morning, I saw a brand new one fitted to a 300tdi at Snetterton airfield in the afternoon. Pete |

I had one of those towball mounted steps [in fact I think it was a twin step jobbie] on a 90 or 110, or may even have been a Series years ago but took it off as I got fed up with bashing my shins on it when getting stuff in and out of the back. I seem to recall one of the dogs getting one of their pads or claws caught in between the bars on the step itself. They're much more secure and stable than the OEM fold up steps though. Steve.

I've not had a problem with them before - I guess it depends how much weight they have on them, mine mostly get used my relatively light kids - I try and stay off it myself I did note that the recommended torque for the two bolts is only 25 nM so maybe a lot get overtightened and pull the rivnuts out. Sorry no I was in Scotland all last week. The step is really good tho, MOG mentions bashing his shims, but it's no worse IMHO than the towball itself. I find it much better than the folding one, and hopefully less prone to rusting/seizing (or pulling rivnuts out of the crossmember). Mine's held on at a different height to the tow ball, using two of Stig's finest, torqueed to 60nm... Mine was about £20 delivered. John, or anyone else, do you know the part number for the spacers by any chance. Dealer seems to think they aren't required, though they certainly are, and the hole in the centre of the thick M8 washers I just bought is just too small Rob 1993 200tdi 90 hard-top 1998 300tdi 90 soft-top 2016 2.2 XS 90 hard-top (sold) |

just to bring up an old thread before i finally get my step installed , did we establish if there is meant to be a spacer ? Also is there a bracket required to stop the rivnuts pulling through the chassis?

I've read through this thread in anticipation of my exact question (do I need spacers?) getting answered & then it stopped! Anyone able to advise please? - thanks.

Here's a picture of my (2013 110SW) factory fitted step. Looks like a thick washer would do the trick.
