If it’s literally started at the point of oil change, it could be that the new oil is to thin and you need a higher viscosity?
From my experience older engines can be quieter with thicker oil, which can also be better in warmer environments. Ride like you stole it!! If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |

I went from a 5w30 to a 5w40, so actually slightly thicker but shouldn’t make a difference as the same viscosity when cold. If it knocks when cold but not when hot, it must be an oil flow issue as an oil when warm would be thinnest. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

I had this once with a Saab. I had changed to a different make of filter (cheaper!) and it turned out that it was draining back into the sump when the engine was switched off. As a result the engine knocked for a couple of seconds on starting while the filter filled and oil pressure built up. Changed back to original filter make and problem fixed.

I bought my current Defender TD5 15P with the engine knocking, I was convinced it was a top end ratttle but it was the bottom end knocking.
It was a one owner vehicle with 51k miles and full service history. The previous owner had just got it serviced by and indy LR specialist and it started knocking leaving the garage. The oil was like mercury, I ended up putting a used Disco 15P engine in, I have the old engine on a stand now just waiting to get a chance to strip the bottom end to assess the damage. I spoke to a guy in local engine/machine shop and he said injector trouble was the usual cause of bottom end failure. Hopefully this is not the case with your own. |

What is your oil pressure like? It is not uncommon for the pressure relief valve to jam in the open position and not allowing any oil pressure to be created. This can lead to a lack of oil pressure at both the timing chain tensioner and lash adjusters in the head. Creating a louder than normal engine knock and rattle. A few seconds of noisier than normal engine noise is possible after an oil change, but it should clear after oil pressure is created. The 5w-40 should if anything increase the oil pressure a little as long as the relief valve is operating properly. Do not take this the wrong way, but when you did the oil change did you do anything else to the engine, replace any other parts? |
