Welcome to the forum
Start with your batteries health. How old is it, how discharged is it? Whilst you are there go around and make sure all the vehicle earthing points are in A1 condition. Bad earths can cause some weird problems. Hopefully that will sort out your problem and it is easy to do at home. |

Ok that was quite the bill Did you check the battery was charged before fitting? They do not always come 100% charged. Would be worth sticking it on a battery charger at least over night to make sure. Is your new alternator actually charging? It should be supplying about 14v at idle. |

Does it not start, or not turn over with the key?
What is your alarm/immobiliser light showing during this? |

Did you try to bypass the starter solenoid? I did it several times on a 2.2. Cannot remember now where such solenoid is located on a 2.4 Puma 110" SW

The 2.4 solenoid is on the starter motor and is one of the most inaccessible parts of the 2.4 Defender. Changing the starter is an astonishingly unpleasant job, I'm sorry to say, since you really can't even see it.
If the starter relay (under the driver's seat) is activating and there is a live output to the solenoid, it is highly likely that the starter is faulty. If the relay is not activating the range of possibilties is wider, and includes the immobiliser. You can also try removing the starter relay and applying a 12V supply to the output termoinal to the starter solenoid. If the engine cranks, the starter is OK and the fault is in the energisation circuit or immobiliser. If it doesn't crank, it's time to change the starter. |

A lot easier to start bypassing the starter relay.
Something like this. A paper clip does the job for a few seconds. Click image to enlarge Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

On the immobiliser front, worth changing fob battery CR2032, just to clear that one off the list. Easy to do, just change battery in fob then shut door, press lock on the fob four times quickly, then unlock once to resync. Ps leave window down just in case of issue.
Note if red alarm light on instrument cluster has been permanently on, even with engine running, it’s telling you fob battery is low. Last edited by Ianh on 1st May 2023 3:37pm. Edited 1 time in total |

In theory by doing that you are applying 12V to the solenoid, so the engine should crank (as I suggested in my last point). If it doesn't crank, then firstly check that you have 12V at one of those terminals, if you do then either you have a faulty starter, a break in the wiring between the relay and the starter, or a broken engine/gearbox earth connection. If you don't have 12V to the starter relay, check fuses and the the main ignition relay. |
