2004 tub on 1998 chassis
Having taken my old tub off to get to the a frame cross
Member to replace it was a perfect time to put the new 2004 tub I have on, which is in much better condition.

It’s been tricky getting it to fit but seems to fit better with the crossmember tabs inside the body work, is this age of rear tub designed to be like this?

It has the classic 300tdi style crossmember and the truck was built in 1998

Tabs (actually the mounting rail) should be inside the body 1999 MY onwards, but the rail is adjustable and actually sits slightly further forwards than the old type crossmember tabs, so the rear tub location is unchanged. If you have put a newer tub on old chassis with tabs located inwards you will find the tub is 5mm too far back.

Put it whichever way fits best. The only difference is where the nuts are located.

For tabs visible the nuts are on plates that rivet to the inside of the tub. For tabs hidden the nuts are welded on the tabs themselves.

If you have the early type crossmember with the welded on tabs it will be easier to have them fitted as per the original tub, unless you weld captive nuts on, as getting to the back to fit nuts will be difficult for some of them.
