Resurrecting this post as getting a little suspicious about the NSF wheel bearing again.....
Out of the blue on the journey to work this morning, seemed to be excessive road noise. Just jacked up all four corners in turn in the office car park (much to amusement of the smokers!). No play on any of the wheels when rocked vertically but the NSF wheel when spun appears to make a slight 'clonk' on every rotation. Could this be a sign of a problem with the bearing again? She's due in to my local indy for a service early next week anyway, so it's been added to the list for investigation. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Well something is definetely 'not right' on the n/s/f corner.
could be bearing, or any other component there [swivel/hub/ wheel mounting etc] Best to get it checked asap ... Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Cheers Dave,
Deffo something not right as the road noise 'roar' appears more pronounced again this evening and if anything there is a little wander in the steering ..... or this could just be my heightened sensitivity to what's perfectly normal and I'm looking for problems..... Still, she's going in next Tuesday and I've no major need to use her in the meantime..... I feel a couple of days of 'working' from home coming on Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

if the play is just in the vertical plane but not in the horizontal plane then its likely to be swivel pin wear. most likley and best case is adjust the top preload on the kingpin, worse case bottom bearing failure.
if the play is in all planes ie 3 & 9, 4 & 10, 12 &6 etc etc then wheel bearing needs adjustment. the new ones have a use once spacer that the out nut is torqued against. it may not of had the correct torque applied. or change them back to the old style two nuts and fold down washer - easier to maintain if wheel bearing issue is a problem. If you have just had one changed the outer bearing race might not have been pressed fully home in the hub and it has now settled home and now needs adjusting up again. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

The new ones should be torqued to (if I recall correctly) 150lbft and the sacrificial nut staked. Not long after I bought my '07 I found that both rear hubs were loose and the nuts had clearly not been tightened correctly (or the hub had been assembled with the bearings improperly seated). There is no evidence at all that the hubs had been dissembled since leaving the factory, so I wonder if there was a 'Friday' problem with some vehicles. I also suspect that some mechanics may not know that these should be so tight and may use the old tighten-until- there's-no-play approach that applied in the double nut & tabwasher days. |

Turned out to be slight play in the swivel joint. Nothing too drastic to make it dangerous (their words!) but certainly needs attending to sooner rather than later. Indy didn't have time or indeed the parts to fix today, so she's re-booked for next week. Thanks to all for your input Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |

Cheers James, appreciate the offer but you forget you are talking to a mechanical numpty Indy also mentioned that the seal had gone too and there was talk of why shims wouldn't work in this case etc etc... At that point my eyes had already glazed over and I uttered those eight magic words. 'How much and when can you do it' They're a decent indy with a good solid reputation locally (used them before too, always very good) so I'm totally cool with letting them sort it.
