What size tyres, and has the transfer box been swapped for a different ratio that is causing the issue?
Your transfer box high-range should be 1:1.4 but these are often swapped out for discovery ones with 1.2 or even lower (I think 1.1 or 1.0 can be found using standard parts ,would need to look at Ashcroft's site for info). |

As far as I'm aware it's all standard, tyres and box etc.

Just out of interest, I paid attention while driving my 1994 300tdi 110 to work this morning. Standard except for 255/85R16 tyres. The change in tyre size probably doesn't actually matter because it will change the speedo reading by a corresponding amount so the engine revs are the same at an indicated 30mph regardless of tyre size unless the Speedo has been adjusted.
Even when the engine was still stone cold it drove smoothly at 25-30mph in 4th gear. Ok, you're not going to win any races but definitely not rough, juddery or struggling. Once fully warmed up I was driving in traffic at 25mph and we went over a couple of railway bridges and 4th gear pulled it along just fine with mild acceleration up the climbs. If you are getting vibration at these speeds/gears with standard transmission it might be worth replacing engine and gearbox mounts and checking the propshafts etc. When were the driveline oils last checked/changed? |

According to the Ashcroft ratio calculator:
https://ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/ratio-calculator/ At 30mph (I assume true speed), the engine should be doing 1574rpm, which for an old diesel should be enough to push you along. I recall my old 19J could happily potter around on 5th gear at 35-40mph ish. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I'm thinking uj may be on its way out.
Drive line oils, both axles were changed recently. Not sure about gear/transfer box oils. Is there any other oils to check or replace? 300tdi 90 1996. |

I'm also wondering if it may be linked to my whistling noise when the turbo kicks in. I'm still getting 1 bar of boost but also a whistle, like air escaping. All Hoses look to be OK though. 300tdi 90 1996.

1 bar sounds a bit high, from memory it should only be between 0.7 and 0.9? This shouldn't affect the driving experience though.
