I am thinking its a thermal fuse. But strange that is so far from the winding. Generally it is fitted as close to the winding as possible, so in case there is a prolonged overload, the fuse will melt and prevent a fire hazard. Of course unless you pulled it out of its correct position.

No that’s exactly the way I found it the live goes into into the first spade then goes through the component onto the coil, all I did was change the live to the spade after the component to bypass it and the charger worked.
A fuse sounds correct as there is no continuity between the component terminals. There is writing on the component but is generally faded also the soldering around the transformer is dubious but as this charger is made in GB in the 80s it’s probably from factory Formerly mao99999 16 Focus RS Nitrous Blue. 11 FFRR TDV8 Vouge SE Black Black. 08 DEFENDER SVX SOFT TOP (SUPERB) 08 DEFENDER 110 DCPU Stornoway grey (Overland Exploration Unit) 05 Fiesta ST 150 Van 04 Jaguar XKR 4.2 Supercharged V8 02 DEFENDER 90 TD5 (next years soft top project) 95 DEFENDER 110 CSW 300 TDi Phoenix black 95 DEFENDER 90 HT Monti Carlo blue COUNTY 300 TDi 67 109" SERIES 2a TUNED 200 TDI 64 DAVID BROWN 990 rat look 55 86" SERIES 1 |

Kind of weird installation then.
I am not telling you to do same, but I did bypass thermal fuses in the past and got away with it every time. I guess manufacturers install extra protection due to liability. You may install an inline current fuse and have that blow incase there is a short circuit. Thats what my old charger has and works for me. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Definitely worth a try, fortunately in the UK we have fuses in the plug 3amp on this so should be fine many thanks for your help Formerly mao99999

Be careful, as the 3A fuse in the plug is protecting the primary side of the transformer. 3A on a 240V is equivalent to approx 700W, or 50A on the secondary at 14V (assuming no losses).
Looking at that winding, I doubt if the secondary is able to handle 50A. I would look at the rated charging current and wire an inline fuse on the low voltage side. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

That would be my first conclusion too. It looks very similar to one I replaced recently on an oil-filled mains electric radiator. |

Again I bow my head to your knowledge and also to the oracle (blackwolf) the component/thermal fuse is direct off the hot wire, ie live wire from the 3 pin plug after the main fuse then on to the 240v side of the transformer should I fit a inline fuse instead of the failed component? Yes, a thermal fuse is generally on the supply, so if the unit (transformer in this case) heats up too much, it cuts off the supply.
If the thermal fuse is on the secondary side of the transformer, it would only cut off the load, but the primary would still have 240V, and if there is a fault in the primary, then it can still cause a fire hazard. That would be bad design. A thermal fuse and a current fuse work very differently, and personally I think a thermal fuse on a charger is an overkill. Thermal fuses are better suited on heating elements, like using a kettle without water, or heaters that can accidentally be covered and overheat. But I would still want to protect over current on the secondary in case for example you accidentally short out the alligator clips, or connect reverse polarity. So a spade fuse (like what you will find in the fuse box of your Defender) in line on the red alligator clip would be the best solution. Great stuff I’ve got plenty of blade fuse holders, I’m fairly electronic savvy both ac and dc (I’ve just re soldered a 2011 Vauxhall fuse box) but had no idea what this component had to do with the unit.
I can remember when I was a young boy maybe 10 or something I bought a second hand 1-10 scale radio control car (also had the series one) and the only charger that came with it was a small transformer that was screwed to a piece of plywood it became my school project to make a vacuum formed cover for it as my hand would “buzz/tingle” when I touched it my “cover” was a A+ project and when shown to my dad the charger and the cover were destroyed and a new one bought Formerly mao99999 16 Focus RS Nitrous Blue. 11 FFRR TDV8 Vouge SE Black Black. 08 DEFENDER SVX SOFT TOP (SUPERB) 08 DEFENDER 110 DCPU Stornoway grey (Overland Exploration Unit) 05 Fiesta ST 150 Van 04 Jaguar XKR 4.2 Supercharged V8 02 DEFENDER 90 TD5 (next years soft top project) 95 DEFENDER 110 CSW 300 TDi Phoenix black 95 DEFENDER 90 HT Monti Carlo blue COUNTY 300 TDi 67 109" SERIES 2a TUNED 200 TDI 64 DAVID BROWN 990 rat look 55 86" SERIES 1 |
