Gloves and steering wheel buttons?

I was driving in gloves the other morning and noticed that the buttons on the steering wheels weren't working very well. I couldn't cancel the cruise control for example (which caught me off guard a little as I approached a motorway roundabout!)

When I took my gloves off, the buttons worked ok. Gloves back on, buttons weren't responding or did respond but poorly..

Are the steering wheel buttons capacitive? (ie. They use the conductivity of your fingers to work?)

Given how they have a physical click and movement, I assumed they were purely physically operated through pressure..

You could have disengaged the cruise control by just tapping the brake pedal. Sorry I don’t know if the steering wheel buttons are capacitive or just press buttons Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Tim - yeah, I did in the end - but it was quite unnerving for the milliseconds I was hurtling up the slip road expecting engine braking to kick in at the push of a button but the accelerator pushed on.

I found the same issue with extending/reducing the distance control for ACC too.

It could of course be something more simple - like pushing two buttons at once due to gloved sausage fingers. But the cancel button is quite isolated and easy to push. So I don't think that was the case.

I will try to play around a little more to see if i can replicate it.

I think they are capacitive yes; the 'click' you feel is actually one single clicker for the whole 'pad', and it relies on sensing your finger to know which button you clicked on.

I haven't tried with gloves though so don't know if it's quite as picky as e.g. a smartphone screen Cheers, David

Could you not just put the heater on….

I have a TD5 and even today I was driving with the window open as I get hot…

Call me old fashioned and not up to date with this modern technology stuff.…

If you drive a modern car you experience a whole new level of frustration. Currently renting a Mercedes and get irritated by a whole bunch of 'issues' I never complain about in my Td5. Touch screen, electric hand brake, dash layout, no heater buttons, whole bunch of beeping driving through narrow streets, lane assist, etc etc.

Typically I enjoy the simplicity of my Defender, but admittedly long distance driving is pretty much nicer in any other car.

Having said that my Range Rover L322 2014 i believe - sadly sold as I was moving country - was actually a nice middle ground.

My cancel button has played up a handful of times. Despite hearing the 'click', the adaptive cruise control was still on.. which was rather disconcerting. Tried to replicate the issue but appears no rhyme or reason.

A second firm press did the trick. 22MY Defender 110 D300 S in Pangea Green and Contrast White Roof

So, testing this week - yes, they're capacitive. I tried clicking buttons with fingernails and with shirt sleeves and found they didn't respond unless you use a nice conductive finger.

To Haymeister's point, that half second of not slowing down definitely gets the heart going!

I've found on phones/touch screens, that very dry or calloused fingers may also not be conductive enough to properly function for capacitive screens/sensors. So, better lube up..
