It looks very similar to the HD axle Britpart sells to me.

I’d guess it’s made by Maer for them, ive always been more skeptical of these big diff pans after watching the Banks Power channels stuff about them |

Indeed, I really want the smallest lightest axle case that provides strength that is adequate with a reasonable margin of safety, not something that looks more like and oilfield truck axle.
If I needed new axle cases I'd be tempted to try to get the reinforced military type and rework them as required. Alternatively I'd use standard cases and get my friend (who happens to a coded welder) to improve them sensibly. |

What do you consider to be dodgy with the standard axle? |

Some of them have bad welds which could lead to the axle failing. Pretty hot topic on here.

ok, seems a bit of a knee-jerk reaction then to replace the entire axle with another if it isn't actually broekn. Plenty don't have the issue, or you could just get yours re-welded if worried.

Although I tend to agree with your sentiment, you really don't want to wait until it is broken since by then you may not be alive. Having the swivel housing break off the front axle is hardly a minor fault, whatever JLR may say.
Personally I feel that some form of preventative intervention is appropriate but replacing the axle case with the monstrosity above is not the optimal response. The LR-designed "catch brackets" are probably a more balanced measure, although that is easy for me to say since my Defender is outside the VIN range to which the defect is supposedly related, as are several of the reported failures on the forum. How I would feel if I was in the affected range is harder to speculate. I do have the brackets fitted to my Defender and would certainly want them on any Defender I drove regularly. |

You do not need to replace the entire axle, only the axle case, and re use your existing internals. Probably a lot of Discovery 300tdi going to the metal recylers. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
