True, EV fires will basically be bad news anywhere. Going back to the Norway topic, if more of the small ferry companies follow suite in Norway alone, it would cause a lot of problems for Norwegians who rely heavily on ferries to get around. I’d imagine this action alone by the ferry company, will get Norwegians thinking twice about EV’s 🤔

there was something in the paper last week or the week before, that the EV market is on verge of swinging the other way and people are going to stay with petrol and diesel cars, due to it been cheaper to run and the power points been a issue,

the Nissan don't make many of the Leaf compared to the Juke and Qashqai. In fact this year is its final full year i believe, then it ends next year in july.
So that shows you how strong the EV market is, Hybrid, that's lot more popular, also it was stated that the plan for 2030, was already missed by 20 years. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

When I relocated to France (from the UAE) we had the chance of buying an electric car for my wife and general around the house use. Problem I found with electric cars:

-They are expensive new and second hand about twice the price here in France
-They only really makes sense as small short distance cars: Home charging, limited range etc. We just bought a diesel BMW for the long +600km hauls.
-The maintenance argument is just for stupid people. They also have issues with brakes, wipers, interior, lights, etc etc. Changing the oil is hardly an issue. Modern cars are all good and reliable.
-But most importantly IF you are looking for a small car there is wide ICE offering you get cheap and with the limited miles driven fuel is hardly an issue either, in fact it works out far more economical to buy a small petrol car.

I wanted to buy an electric car make the change etc. Was looking at a used Renault Zoe, problem with those is that you need to rent the battery: Euro 50 a month (or buy at Euro 6k). In the end we bought a 1 year old Peugeot 108 (or is a 109 I am not sure) which uses about Euro 20 in petrol a month and was 1/3 of the price. Does all the ULEZ zones etc, everything simple and cheap.

Not sure how reliable the Old technology is.. I'm sure there have been more casualties form a hi lift than an EV fire. Very Happy

Also on any vessel they use fire pumps that use sea water. By this fact they have an infinite amount of water. Thumbs Up

Possibly, but give it time.

Most Hi-lift injuries are caused by incompetence or stupidity, most EV fires are not.

The sort of vessel which is most likely to have to deal with an EV fire is also the sort of vehicle for which the infamous free surface area problem is likely to be significant. It is surprising how little water on the car deck of a ferry is needed to cause a complete and very rapid loss off the vessel. Think Herald of Free Enterprise.

Although there are some practical difficulties, I imagine that the most effective measure for dealing with an EV fire on a ferry would be to jettison the vehicle overboard very promptly. It would be shame that you'd probably also have to jettison a number of other vehicles in order to do this, but they'd be lost when the ship sank anyway.
