If your engine is mod then use an oil with higher HTHS value (but stick with grade) than that one specified for the std Puma (IMO). eg. Redline 5W-30. Puma 110" SW

Do not mind if it is pours like water as long it has a high HTHS value your engine will be protected. 5W-40 is too thick for the oil pump, oil cooling jets design, rings and valve train. Fully synth stands better oxidation. M1 5W-30 ESP has a HTHS of 3.58 mPa.s; Redline, 3.8; Ford spec, 2.9-3.0. Viscosity is not strictly related to oil film strengh. Puma 110" SW

Because synthetic oil is thinner than mineral oil it has easier pumping characistics and an easier flow rate. As soon as you turn the starter key the synthetic oil should be around you engine in the blink of an eye cutting down on engine wear. So says Tom Sheppard in his book Vehicle Dependent Expedition guide.
He also says that if the vehicle uses 15W-40, do not go below or above the right hand figure but you could go below the left hand figure to 10W-40,5W-40 or even 0W-40. Anyway at my last service the dealer used Castrol Magnatec A1 5W-40. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel 1992 110 200tdi csw -Zikali 2008 110 2.4 tdci csw-Zulu 2011 110 2.4 tdci csw-Masai |

Mineral or synth has nothing to do with viscosity . eg. a 5W-30. The W figure has a min. Kinematic vis of 3.8 cSt (@100ºC), whereas the 30 has a range between 9.3 - 12.5 cSt (@100ºC).
xW-40: 40 ranges between 12.5-16.3 cSt (@100ºC) and so on. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

LandRover say 5w/30 meeting Ford spec WSS-M2C-913C.
All oil refiners and blenders should be able to meet this spec. I use standard oil to this spec, but I change oil and filter ever 6000miles.(1st change was at 1000) a bit old fashioned I know . I use Morris Lubricants Multivis 5w/30 semi synthetic. Its never over in my land rover. 2007 Defender HTop. 1952 Series One 80" 1977 Muir-Hill 111. 2014 Triumph Tiger800xc 1999 Discovery 2 td5 1982 Ransomes TSR300D. 2002 Yamaha XT600e. 2010 Freelander2 (the wifes) 2008 John Deere X140 |

I am just about to change oil today - have bought Castrol Edge 5W30. The way I see it there is nothing wrong in using Edge instead of magnatec - apart from Edge being a bit more expensive. Am I wrong on this ?

It has a lot of different spec mentioned - but not the ford WSS-M2C-913C - Castrol says on their product page it is the best oil in their range. The reason I am changing is because i suspect one valve lifter to be knocking. 14 days ago i changed to Havoline 5w30 - with WSS-M2C-913B - just found out that the last letter is different - do not know what it means - if anything.
Am going to clean the lubricationsystem as well - the car has not been driven ( almost not) for two years. Regards CRJ 88 Ser. 3 1980 -sold Puma 130 - 08- sold 90 200tdi 1991 - sold 88 Ser. 3 1977 200 TDI 110 CC 2003 |
