Do you have a picture of your car? Here is mine - woodcote green

Looks like a proper LR press/publicity shot - very fitting 👍

1997 Defender 110 300 Tdi CSW Alpine White
Let me see if I can help. The first Td5 given a production VIN was 134991 built around October 1997.

There were 151 vehicles produced before they started consistently building Td5s from 159807 at the end of August 1998.

The first third or so were built Oct 97 to Jun 98, then the last 100 were steadily built more and more before final ramp up.

Rivarama, S840BDU is quite good at number 45.
Sicastle, S933BDU is number 84.

Some great vehicles you have there Thumbs Up

I will get some more stats for you! LR Workshop

WoW Will that’s so cool. May I ask how you know all this?

For reference, mine was registered in August 1998 - so most likely produced a little bit before that. VIN 155154. Let me know what you think.

Yours was built around 19th June 1998. My website tracks every Defender in the UK, so I can dig around the data to find things out.

I've created a page that lists all the vehicles https://defender.lrworkshop.com/collections/early-td5-defenders, which may be of interest (I only show the full number plate where the vehicle is likely not around any more, or it's publically available from other sources).

The most common number plates were:
S***BDU
S***AOX
R***ERW
R***HAB

Only 3 of the first 15 have had an MOT since 2005. They might be scrapped, or live in a barn somewhere waiting for a magazine feature article in 5 years time! LR Workshop

Evening all,

Very glad to have stumbled upon this thread! i have just bought a '98 TD5 in green which i believe gets me into the pre-prod club

It is plated as S952 BDU, looking into archives i believe it to be 125 of the 151

BDU
Will, Your site is fantastic except there is no way of reaching you. I want to sell my BDU and was wondering if there is much of a premium on her given she was number 78 off the pre production line?
Thanks

Hi Sarah. Possibly, but more likely its value would lie in its condition and mileage. The perceived extra value is probably not of interest to most people, so you'd have to convince people about why its special! LR Workshop

The fact its number 78 off the line to me has no significance and adds no value.

as mentioned by Will, it'll be down to its confition/mileage/history
