led bulb h4 headlight
Good morning all
I would like to have opinions on the h4 led bulbs in a defender headlight. I found a site that makes comparisons called Bulb fact. Is there enough space behind the headlight? I already have crystal headlights

They work really well and result in much better illumination, however under ECE law they are illegal and the UK has recently become quite strict on this. You'd have to find out how zealous the enforcement regime in your area is and decide if it's worth the risk.

also live in an area with snow in the winter. so you need led bulbs that heat the headlight. After as long as it does not dazzle people who arrive in front of it, it should pass.

I watched a video the other day about this in Spain, they recently changed the law you can fit a h4 homologated led bulb with not issues, the issue is no company actually makes a homologated h4 bulb all the ones for sale are not homologated and hence illegal to fit. Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

Not on anything built pre 1985, totally legal.

at one time I rode with 100w bulbs even passed the technical control and no problem. I saw at philips, osram h4 led but I'm afraid of being disappointed by the performance. I don't think it should in danger other road users.what does the h4 led beam do?

Just a note that OSRAM has recently released a Night Breaker H4 LED lamp which is street legal, to replace H4 halogen lamp, for certain country/vehicles only.
Product Number is 64193DWNB, they are more expensive than other H4 LED lamps which do not bear the proper approvals for road use.

The legality of retrofitting Night Breaker H4 LED lamps being country and vehicle dependent, the approved list is available from OSRAM directly : https://www.osram.com/am/night-breaker-led.jsp and https://www.osram.de/am/night-breaker-led/.../ledcheck/

So, while it is illegal to retrofit these new Night Breaker H4 LED lamps in the UK, it is fully legal to do so on a classic Defender in Germany !
I am in France, and the Defender is not listed for my country. Anyway, I am happy enough with the fact they are approved for use in Germany, and fitted them a few weeks ago. Both countries are in Europe so I don't see why it should be a problem. Very happy with the result. Not tested in icy/snowy conditions yet though...

/Mat

I think I'm going to take the led night breakers and have them adjusted and as it's the winter season I'll see what happens at worst I'll put rain x on the lenses

Typical of the UK government to ban a product only a year or two before a fully-tested, approved (in some countries of the EU) product becomes available. It took them ages to ban it. How long before they approve this?

I'm not a fan of any of the current 7" LED headlights, purely from an aesthetic point of view. They all just look a bit plastic and space-age for a Defender, but the day the UK government approves these bulbs for use, I'm buying a pair. So if I put a penny a week aside, I should have enough saved up by that time.

Talking of 'space age' looking LED headlights, I have just become aware of these - https://www.holley.com/products/electrical...ts/LFRB135

Ideal for early Defender and Series Land Rovers maybe...... Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Something like that would be good if they did a RHD version with CE marking, but the market is too small I fear.
