Car won't start but that's not the question. I know it needs new glow plugs but until Thursday it would start after a while. But on Thursday the battery went flat before it started so I bought a new one for Friday. Friday it wouldn't start but the weird thing is it won't turn over on the starter anymore. The starter activates and tries to turn the engine over but the engine won't turn more than a little, it's like when you leave it in gear / handbrake on and try to start it but without the lurching because it's not in gear. Kind of half a turn but no more because there seems to be some resistance within the engine.
I'm wondering if it's possible to get pneumatic lock by flooding the engine trying to start it? If yes, how do you get out of it? It's warmer weather tomorrow so I can have a look at it. Maybe rotate the engine backwards on a socket on the crank pulley? I can't push the car backwards because it's pointing nose first down hill. The battery has been recharged so it's not that. Something else? Thanks. Andy. (Edited to correct the title) Last edited by AndyS on 17th Dec 2022 4:57pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Arr, yes, hydraulic. My apologies. Could also be a faulty new battery so I've recharged the old one too.

It sounds very like the intermittent failure to crank that my 2007 Puma has done occasionally throughout the 12 years I have owned it. My suspicion is the starter solenoid or motor. Usually if I try again after a few moments it cranks. It is very strange!

DO NOT turn the engine backwards, the cam chain will not like it and it could jump sprockets etc, then when you start it it could cause a lot of damage.

Now the weather is mild the car started fine but there's a strong electrical smell and the starter is making a different noise. I guess in trying to get it going I've damaged the starter.
I've just left a message with a mobile mechanic to replace the glow plugs and maybe fit a new starter. Thanks everyone. 👍 |

That’s two real PITA jobs you have given your mobile mechanic

I doubt he'll get back to me, TBH. There are so few garages who'll work on Defenders around here. There is a Defender garage down near Tonbridge / Sevenoaks but it's a PITA to leave the car and come home as there's no direct public transport link and too far to cycle. The last local garage I tried didn't have a clue about anything I mentioned, I ended up paying him £40 for his time but he didn't fix anything.
