TD5 Dash Downgrade
Hi!

So maybe an odd one but I really prefer the pre face lift dash as also don’t want the large chunk of plastic in the middle to hold stereo etc.

Is this possible to do though? Are parts readily available?

Thanks
Martin

Hi, Anything is possible, at a price.
Good quality original Defender parts are harder to find, very few Defenders are getting broken up for parts. This is particularly true for interior trim, such as the dashboard.

The new dashboard wasn't just a simple change, it was part of a bigger update with a different wiring loom and new switches. Reverting everything to the old, pre 2002 type will not be straightforward.

It would be a lot of expense and trouble, just to make your vehicle non original, and therefore less desirable and worth less.

Might be easier finding someone looking for the newer style and do a swap?

Ah didn’t think re wiring loom etc, is the bulkhead the same or did that adapt at all?

Thanks
Martin

Didn't the wiper setup change with the facelift ?

I'm pretty sure the bulkhead vent mechanism changed too Confused 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Very Happy Yeh I’m slowly realising what I thought could be simple is far from it so maybe I should accept the dash that it comes with

Series 3 dash is fundamentally the same as Defender pre-puma.

-Wiper motor inside bhd with the pull push wire and wipers screwed through the BHD 1960's style.
-Heater outside in engine bay pushing air into the 'tray' or heater duct just above the knee to distribute the air. The wiper motor is mounted in this area.
-Short top dash screwed onto a simple frame to finish it off a little.
-Area between the heater duct and the top dash has evolved of the years: Dashboard, center console, more plastic, still the same flap levers (in fact the earlier lever action is nicer than the later).
-AC is an afterthought banged underneath. It works but marginal. Outside temp above 40C is a challenge.
-Obviously any of the heat and cold is only reserved for the front, rear seats beeing an afterthought in the (1950's) design.

You can play around with the dash from 1972 to 2006 and fit things around surprisingly easy with some brackets.

I think for the PUMA they just took everything off the bulkhead and started from scratch to install a normal modern dashboard. MAYBE can you do the same and strip back to the bulkhead and start again. Best to have a parts car.

Or you just by a later model Td5

It is amazing how long they kept this going and how popular and acceptable this is today. Personally I like to have to play with the controls to make it half work. Makes you feel useful again.[/list]
