Just had a puncture fixed and been told my tyres are Van tyres which are harder than normal 4x4 or road tyres and not suitable for my Defender 110 (2007). Apparently they will give a poor ride and potentially stress the suspension. Any views?

Not heard of this before. What tyres are they? Most 4x4 tyres are LT, light truck, but that's normal.

Land Rover used to fit them as standard in 2008 when we bought our Puma. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Thanks everyone. Thought it sounded fishy.
Now I'm confused about pressure. They were all on 80 PSI !!! when I bought her 2 weeks ago. The tyres say 83PSI on them, but not sure if that's the max or recommended. Landrover says 34ish PSI all round The dodgy Tyre garage told me to put them on 60psi all round. ???? |

If you look on the door post just beside the driver's seat you will see a sticker with the pressures listed. It lists 30psi in front and 48psi in the rear with the maximum amount of passengers. For a full load inside plus a fully loaded trailer the pressure in the rear is given as 65psi.

I remember my 110 was running 30/48psi when I first bought it.
Dropping the rear down to mid 30s made a huge difference to the ride. |

Yep in previous incarnations the 110 had a maximum of 48 psi for towing but I have run the rears at 35 and you do notice it in the ride. If I was towing a heavy trailer I did go back to 48 but it was a rare occurance. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

just found this on the Protyre website:
"Fitting C and LT tyres on cars: Fitting heavier van tyres on cars and small vans (assuming they fit) definitely isn’t recommended for two reasons. First of all, C-type tyres may be designed to take a higher load, but they are also designed to travel at lower speeds. Most cars are driven too fast to drive on a C-type tyre, greatly increasing the risk of tyre failure. Second, C and LT tyres are much heavier. All that extra weight will do nothing good for your engine or fuel efficiency"[/i] it looks like I have commercial tyres, denoted by the (C), meant for a Van. The tyres have a different construction, hence the higher psi. not sure what to do now... |

The General tyres you have were standard fitment on most defenders for many years.
Unless they're knackered, there's nothing to worry about. |
