think they are electrical (steper motors in the dash to move the dial)
Maybe first thing is to check connectors are seated correctly, the other thing I can think of is diagnostic software to see if the speed signal is still being given (can the diagnostics give that detail out? that I don't know) Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing. 5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details |

Electronic. It sounds to me as though there is an open circuit somewhere between the transducer and the Ipac.

Did you notice any reduction in power or different throttle response? Had a case but on a 2.4, if the ecu is not getting the speed signal from the sensor. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Ha, no, no loss of power. I’ve an LS3 6.2 litre V8 engine instal with a 6 speed auto transmission! The fault only started after the instrument cluster was removed and replaced and the connection has been checked and rechecked.

Connected my ICarsoft Reader and it gives a speed when driving so the transducer is working and cabling intact up and until the in cabin fuse box. The fault must be in the cluster or the loom after the OBD2 port. I’m betting the connector and will go back and quadruple check the connector for faulty pins. I think as identified in the following photos. Pin 2 and 13 are to the Transducer. |

Hi Dinnu. I have this same problem exactly, I lost function my speedometer functionality and together with it the throttle response got significantly reduced. Specially on the 6th gear. Did recovering the speedometer recover your throttle response? I am becoming a bit mad already with this issue. Thank you very much in advance. |

Hi fellas;
Manuel, sorry mate when you say “Recovered” the Speedo, do you mean ‘replaced’ with another unit (cluster), or are you talking of an OBD data entry to ‘reactivate’ the Speedo/odometer? If so perhaps I’ve had that data entry fall off my ECU. That May Be the original problem! I’ve still not replaced my faulty Speedo/odometer unit having made due with a decent HUD unit with GPS speed. Now my fuel level gauge is next to useless (no needle deflection from empty) and the temp gauge is on its way out. Both the temp gauge and the fuel gauge needles WILL work properly if I tap (multiple and firmly) on the dash top, so it’s not the cabling into the unit. I’ve another suitable cluster that I swapped out to test the connections due to the speedometer/odometer issues and both fuel and temp deflected correctly immediately, so it’s at least the cluster for the two latter failures. My issue re an easy-acceptable fix is that my custom engine/transmission fit involve a digital gear indication and animation in the centre of the cluster. I have to have it transferred or another fitted to my new cluster, then re security coded and the current (rough) odometer readout for the new engine/trans coded into the display. There’s no one in Tasmania, Australia that I can find to do the work, so I have to arrange and transport the vehicle across Bass Strait to Victoria. A huge logistic exercise and cost.🥺 |

Hi Baytown.
In my case it was just a fuse, when replaced the speedo worked again and consequently my ECU received the data correctly and put the turbocharger to work again. Thanks Dinnu. I was going mad with the possibility of a turbocharger replacement. Thank you all |

as said when the speedometer issue was solved the turbo came back to life on its own.
There must be a link between the speed sensor and the turbocharger function through the ECU. |
