I’d be more worried if they didn’t creek as it would mean all the bits had fallen off. It’s just part of the way defenders are built

The doors are the source of many creaking noises and this can be hugely mitigated by adjusting the catches correctly and applying Gummi-Pflege to the seals.

I used to have similar creaking from the footwell, addressed by tightening up all the footwell footplate bolts. 10min job.
I notice you’ve got a DC. I have wondered if they suffer from more body flex than a SW or even a 90. Mine creaks a lot. Head round a hairpin bend and it’s pretty obvious. And then (as now) when winter arrives, even more creaking as everything shrinks. Just put the music on louder or focus on the other noises.. My double cab gets creakier once it gets below 10c The ifor canopy doesn’t help either… |

My 90 2011 Puma is the same… I’m quite used to it now Ride like you stole it!!

They do creak more when it is cold, and when it is frozen it can be even worse. I have found that adjusting the doors to fit properly and keeping the seals clean and dressed (the Gummi-Pflege stuff) really helps. It also tends to reduce the likelihood of the doors freezing shut as the seals shed the water better.
I did also have to tighten up most of the bolts which hold the body together on mine not long after I bought it, those holding the roof panel to the B-posts, and those along the cab rear panel (it's a double cab) were on the whole actually loose. That stopped a lot of body noise. The build quality of Defenders, certainly in the last decade of production, really was quite exceptional - and not in a good way. There comes a point when cranking up the volume is the best remedy and gives you peace of mind. (Edited because the fingers were typing different words to those the brain was directing!) I've got what sounds exactly the same 'creak' from under the driver's foot well also. Has appeared in the last week or so. I've had the vehicle 18 months or so now without it but sounds like it may be connected to the recent drop in temps? I've had a liberal spray of wd40 today as I got sick of hearing it but will check all bolts in the area. Thanks for bringing up the topic Jed and appreciate everyone's comments so far.

Update which may help others.
The creaking has been getting worse over the last few weeks, so much so that the 'turn the radio up' was no longer working. So, I finally managed to get underneath this afternoon and have a poke around. Long story short, it would seem to be the back edge of driver foot plate where it meets the seat box. Bolts were tight but actually loosening them a little at this stage has almost cured it. I will revisit and investigate further in due course but I am so relieved to hopefully rid the noise that was starting to really wind me up! |

My 110 station wagon also has a creaking from the footwells. Where do I find the bolts that need tightening? Inside the footwell or outside underneath? Is there a torque setting or just nip them up?

Depending on your rubber mat and carpet and sound deadening configuration, the bolts are normally into captive nut plates or the plastic raw plug type and should be fairly straightforward to tighten if they are lose. Not sure what to advise if everything is tight though?
