Apparently there was quite a lot of resentment by classic mini owners towards the BMW versioned owners at the time. Not sure whether things have calmed down with time?

Also has something to do with Rover designing and doing most of the work for the new mini that BMW ... took

Ive had every one of the defenders from a v8 90 through to last production puma...maybe with the everso slight exception of the v8, because it was a v8 i have never ever missed one or been sad to sell it

I didnt find the seats that bad, but it certainly wasnt comfortable - you couldnt leave them anywhere without risking someone stealing the doors etc

The new one, which isnt a discovery - i have one of those - is what it should be and a great character and fun, with everything a modern vehicle should Mike

Its so far apart from the Defender you'll be closer to doing a comparison between a mini from the Leyland era and a MINI from the early BMW era as they were still at least both monocoque FWD hatchbacks.

Do drivers of the new mini complain about the drivers of the old mini and vice versa? Laughing
Similarly drivers of the Beetle?

Maybe it's the time between the end of the old and the start of the new that makes the difference.

I got many a single fingered salute form a mini owner when i had my new Cooper in 2003, after about 2010 I’ve not heard anyone complaining.

Sad fact, every car I’ve owned has been from when BMW owned that brand (TD5 110, Cooper, 2 Cooper S’s and an L322), yet I’ve never had a BMW.

I think the P300 D110 is great fun to drive - especially compared to my previous Discovery 5 TDV6.
The engineers have done a really good job calibrating the suspension on the new Defender - its a lot more controlled feeling at speed on either pavement or gravel than the Discovery.

And as a side note the Koni Raid shocks I installed on my Defender 90 completely transformed that truck. Its a lot better ride with more precise handling with the Konis than the previous Bilsteins.

The new defender is a leisure road car that is great for going off-road. The old defender is a tarted up farm vehicle that is next to useless on the road! Its pointless comparing the two defenders its apples and oranges.

Its not quite the same though is it!I know defender ownership is a broad church but i doubt if you asked the defender massive in 2012 to create a remit for a new defender I doubt it would be anything like the suv we have now!

I recently sold my L405 Range Rover and replaced it with a new Defender 90. My biggest surprise with the new Defender is the near perfect - for an SUV - combination of handling and ride. No question that my old Range Rover would now feel very barge like and wallowy in comparison, and for not nearly as much gain in ride quality as you'd expect.

As for comparisons with the old Defender, this always used to drive me crazy in the new Defender reviews. They'd start with something like "well, no question it's a huge improvement on its predecessor". Of course it is!

l wouldn't describe the old Defender as "next to useless" on road, although it can be made a lot better with a few modifications such as different dampers, extra soundproofing etc

But yes, it was a farm vehicle that people started using as a car. Land Rover addressed the issue decades ago, it was called "Discovery" but the Defender always retained a strong following from enthusiasts.

l've done 90,000 road miles in my 110 since 2014but am leaning towards the new one because l haven't got the enthusiasm for maintaining the 110 that l used to have.

I’ve done 20k mostly country lanes and a roads in my TD5 110 in the last two years, I’m 6,4 and don’t find it uncomfortable at all, we quite often do a good 5-6 stint in it when we go to mull and i don’t find it that bad on a long drive.

It’s on stock springs, bilsteins and it’s poly bushed with the full gwyn lewis kit. It’s not even got carpet.

The best thing l fitted to my 110 was cruise control.

Set the speed and just steer. Normal on modern cars but even more useful on an old Defender when you've 400 miles of motorway

So much better on a long journey
