19 inch Wheels - badly advised - well, not advised at all!
I've ordered a Defender 110 250D with the 19 inch tyres, believing this would give a better ride. I told the salesperson that we will use it to go to France a lot including the Alps for skiing.

I've now discovered that 19 inch wheel (165/55/ R19) tyres are very limited for Winter/All weather with the appropriate markings. The OE tyres appear not to be M&S or Snowflake marked (getting this checked), and chains not available. But why fit chains (unless it's sheet ice) - I'm buying it to do what a Defender should do!

In France it is now the law that tyres in the Alpine regions must have the M&S or snowflake (3PMSF) markings.

I've written to the dealership but this is a deal-breaker for me. Should the dealership have advised me about the wheel-size? My view is they should. In any event I need 20 inch wheels now given the circumstances.

Help!

It’s was only a few years ago that consumers of Evoque and Discovery Sports were asked on the day of collection to sign a form to say that when oil dilution occurs it’s not Land Rovers fault but that of the consumer and how they drive, therefore the dealer will charge for additional oil changes……..even if they have the five year service plan….

My wife changes cars every three to four years for new or nearly new and not once have we seen a Land Rover sales person that has worked in a dealership for more than a year. This year alone the three sale people from three different dealerships have all been ex BMW. None of them had even been to any of the LRE sites.

In a nut shell, you, the consumer has to do your own research and then let them earn their commission.

Are you sure that's the correct tyre size? LR lists 255/65/R19s as suitable for winter use on a 19" wheel:

https://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/docume...c/G2902117

Looking at the specific tyre they recommend - Continental TS850P SUV, it does have M+S markings:

https://www.mytyres.co.uk/rshop/tyre/Conti...V/R-375120

I wouldn't expect a car to come with winter tyres, even a 4x4 like a Defender. You'll get summers or all-seasons at best. The fact that LR list specific winter tyres suggests to me that they think you should have an additional set of wheels and tyres for situations like yours, where they require specific types of tyres.

As for the dealership advising you, I always assume they know the bare minimum and that if I want to do something out of the ordinary, I need to do my own research to satisfy myself that the car is suitable.

Did you specifically ask them if the 19"s are suitable for areas where M+S/snowflake tyres are mandatory? If you did and they said "yes", and the tyres later turn out to be not suitable, then it could be grounds for misrepresentation if that (false) statement induced you into signing the contract for sale. If you just mentioned it in passing, then I'm not sure there's much you can do.

All Defenders come with All Season tyres as standard, there is the option to have factory fit all terrains, or your choice of aftermarket tyres.

Not the clearest photo but standard tyre on mine and it’s marked M+S (20 inch)

Mud and Snow M+S isn’t accepted in the alps, it needs to be 3 Peaks marked.

Source? My understanding was that M+S (only) was acceptable until 2024, when 3 Peaks DOES become mandatory...

That is my understanding too.

FWIW I would prefer the option to have "All Season" tyres marked with the M&S/3PMSF marking (rather than swapping between Summer and Winter. These do not appear to be available in the 19 inch tyres - hence the concern with this size.

I'd always been told I needed 3 Peak Marked tyres for diving in France and Switzerland in the alps in the winter. I've not driven out for a few years but I was always under the impression I needed 3 Peaks and chains, given how bad the snow was when I crossed the Brenner Pass in 2012 I was glad I had both.

At least in Germany, M+S is only acceptable until 2024 if the tyre was produced before 2018.

Quick research showed, France and Switzerland do not have any consistent M+S/3PMSF rules for their countries.

Not particularly helpful for the exact issue, but my 18 Goodyear Wrangler "All-Terrain" are only M+S rated. No peaks or Snowflakes visible.

It looks like you can get Goodyear DuraTracs for 255/65/R19 size. They are 3 peak rated for other sizes. But it's unclear if they're 3 peak rated for R19s..

Sounds like carrying a pair of snow chains is the cheapest solution. Pop them in with your breathaliser test and your gilet jaunes.

Exactly why I run bfg ats.

Not sure you can blame the dealer that you choose the wrong tyres and rims. A quick Google would show what tyre options there are for what rims.

Prior to spending my money I do my research from multiple sources.

Dealer won't know answer to all your specific needs. It does fall to buyer to make own decision.

Why do we all generically look to blame someone else. Cheers

Most Uk dealers won’t have a clue about mud and snow to begin with given how few people here consider even running winter tyres.
