Heated windscreen melted connector
Bit of a panic this morning. It’s that time of year, so turned on the heated screen.after a minute or so, I could smell burning, and 20 seconds later acrid smoke started to rise from the passenger dashboard. I guessed correctly it was the screen, so turned it off. Lucky escape I think.
Now I’m unsure what’s caused it. It’s a new screen, replaced a month ago, and first time it’s been switched on. Upon inspection it’s melted the female wire connector on the loom. There going to replace the screen under warranty Any other ideas on what could have caused it? And can I just crimp a new connector onto the loom ?

That's unusual, you don't say which side has melted but I assume driver's side (power) rather than passenger side (earth).

You could crimp on a new connector, make sure the copper in the cable is nice and bright, not corroded and green as that could be the cause of your issue. It can get quite damp in that area and the HFS does draw quite a substantial current. There's a couple of good videos on Youtube showing you how to clean corroded copper wire with white vinegar, salt and baking soda. If I was you I'd consider looking at the connectors on both side of the circuit.

In essence, cut back damaged cable, clean copper strands if required, crimp on new connector, try HFS again when fitted.

I never needed my heated windscreen, but nevertheless I tried it out right after buying the Landy.
It's the "bathtub curve" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathtub_curve Smile
I know this doesn't help practically but maybe mentally Smile

It’s the passenger side. Cut wire back and crimped on new connector.all good. Couldn’t see any damage, the. It out section was a strange orange colour, probably because it got so hot. Laughing
Just at a bit of a loss as why? Was working fine.
