vw Polo - anyone want to hazard a guess...
about a month ago the wife abandoned the car up the road as it stopped running.
I went to recover the car later that day - started no problem and has been fine until this morning.

wouldn't start - just turns over (doesn't sound like the battery is on it way out or anything like that).
left it half an hour and it started fine - thought I'd reverse it off the drive and take it for a quick drive but it stalled - could have been me but suspect it was the car - and now it won't start?

will try it again later Confused

no MIL light or anything - any pointers?

Check fuel gauge, and air filter.

Is there an immobiliser light?

Checked the fuel guage (full).
Not checked the air filter (yet) but I don't think its too old.

RAC just been round and reckons there might be a problem with two injectors.

Thumbs Up

I very much doubt fuel injectors would be irregular. They work or they don’t. It wouldn’t be fine one day, not the next, then ok again in my opinion. Possibly the supply to them.

A little more info would help
Is it a diesel or petrol engine ?
What year is it ?
What size ?

When was the fuel filter last changed as that’s a relatively low cost quick replacement to try.

1.6 diesel. 59 plate.

from a very respected mechanic / engineer - 'doesn't sound like the injectors', or at least not for the reasons that were suggested to me (the inconsistent live data).

seems fine again now. I do need to check / replace the fuel filter but pretty sure its not old.

reference the injector(s) not working they are known (generally speaking) to stick - I would therefore describe this and 'on its way out' as it starts to stick more frequently. so I guess you could describe this as 'do or don't work' or as 'on its way out' ?

the odd thing for me is a lack of MIL indicator?

Have you your own OBD2 reader, you could be getting Diagnostic Trouble Codes without the MIL light appearing on the dash. Noting something like a dirty filter is unlikely to trigger a DTC.

Running a bottle of forte specialist injector cleaner in half a tank of diesel, especially after a diesel filter change will help clean up the injectors, noting some fill the new filter with it prior to fitting so the injectors get a good neat dose. https://www.forteuk.co.uk/product/diesel-s...r-cleaner/

Ideally get it read with VCDS and see what, if any, codes are there...much easier to diagnose that way.
Our petrol Polo ran very iffy when an injector went down, code found and second hand one fitted...all been good since...fingers crossed!
I have VCDS if you anywhere near Congleton!
Cheers

might be the crank sensor acting up, My dads jeep would cut out and then decide to start again after a while. Nothing ever flagged up on the dash, might be worth a punt. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

If its anything like the peugeot 306 HDI system, the ecu would put the car into either a limp mode or just not start at all. Thats if the fuel pressure is failing Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

When you say it stalled and wouldn’t restart, do you mean it turns over but won’t fire?

I think the 1.6 Polo has a fuel solenoid on it - this sounds like either solenoid failure or a loose connection that makes but then breaks (hence the non-starting).

Hope this might help to track it down and resolve…

Procta - you're not the first to mention;

might be the crank sensor acting up,

Caterham, if you can get the car on live diagnostics, that should help. It should show you everything working and what isn't. Injector pressures etc. A good decent car tuner should be able to help you with that.
An old school tuner helped diagnose my dad's Jeep crank sensor. Thumbs Up Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Sounds fuelling related, possibly fuel pump or electrical connection maybe on main ground or live side.

Similar to how the VCV behaves when it fails on a Defender.

I would imagine you’d need live diagnostics and details of expected injector pressure parameters to take a look at that, personally I’d get it looked at and save yourself the headache unless you are skilled in the trade.
Even then these things can be difficult to diagnose as you can bet your life it’ll be fine when it’s taken anywhere. Laughing $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I will get a second opinion looking at the live data but I'm not really in a rush now as the problem seems to have passed.......I just know it'll come back when it's least welcome Crying or Very sad

I felt it was fuel related but based on very little.

will let you know what I find in due course. thank you. Thumbs Up
