Leaking from expansion tank cap?
As per the title. No issues with cooling etc but constantly leaking. Levels look fine. Any thoughts?

Mine was similar. Although mine had less obvious staining so it was less clear as to where the issue was.

I was trying to work out if the tank had a hairline crack, or the cap was faulty.

I put a new cap on (the simplest option), and it's been perfect ever since.

Less than a tenner iirc

They also like to fail from the seam, where the upper half joins the lower half. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I’m pretty certain it’s not cracked and there is coolant right on the threads of the neck. There doesn’t appear to be any sort of seal in the cap, not sure if there should be. It’s just plastic on plastic.

They all do that, Sir...

Seriously, every time I look under the bonnet there's a trace of pink fluid around the tank cap. And yes, I HAVE replaced the cap, no difference at all and the original is in the tool-box "just in case".

The coolant has never dropped enough to cause a problem, the biggest PIA is actually seeing the level in the tank. Do JLR deliberately make it out of non-see-through plastic? One day I'm gonna shake the thing so hard trying to get the fluid to slosh around and become visible, that I'm gonna rip the whole tank off its bracket!

It’s dripping into the exhaust and doesn’t smell great when stationary!! Have ordered a new cap. If it still leaks I’ll wrap a bit of ptfe tape around the threads!

Keep in mind that the cap has a pressure relief and is designed to maintain a set pressure. Once that pressure is reached, it needs to vent. The pressure is just released over the tank.

My old 90, with the brass tank, has a pipe that routes the vent downwards of the tank itself.
My daily is a Volkswagen. That has a spherical tank, with an inbuilt vent that vents beneath the tank, and a level sensor (flashes temp warning light on dash if level goes too low), and is a see through. But guess these good to have attributes for a coolant expansion tank are too complex for LandRover’s engineers. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

You could fit a better quality Iveco cap:

I had precisely this issue that got steadily worse over time. Mine ended up being a very poorly cylinder head gasket. there was no smoke or anything sinister but now and then the cap would burp a load of coolant out. when I took it apart I found a crack that allowed air into the cooling. it was cheaper and quicker to source another 2.4 engine than mess about with it. it also managed to destroy an injector in the process Smile

Don’t answer that we all know the reality, but it’s a shame when LR are being compared to Iveco for quality Whistle Ride like you stole it!!
