2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Java Black

Weather question for the Cornish

Sorry for the lame question, but I know we have quite a few members down in the SW. If we were to book holiday in Cornwall, near St Mawes for the 2nd half of May, what are our chances of getting some half decent weather? Is it fairly common to see high-teens Celsius and a bit of sun?

It’s tempting to just go abroad to guarantee to some warmth, but I love that part of uk when it’s not raining. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

well its spring and that is always a gamble anywhere in the UK. April showers bring may flowers is the saying.
However we generally have better weather in the deep SW the rest of the UK, but as to guarantee good weather is not going to be possible.
The temps are normally in the high teens for that time of year so that may not be an issue.
The wind is often brisk then but that does bring in the good surf and long swells for the north coast.
There are good wet day venues like the eden project to keep you occupied as well as a host of gardens and galleries if the weather is poor. .

Thanks, I’m leaning towards going for it. We were there mid September and got some great weather so I’m feeling optimistic. We have dog so indoor venues a limited for us, hence the desire for the dry. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

If you go take some time to check out St Just church nearby.

Oh and walk past the shops and then look out into the open part of the harbour, there is normally an Ex Camel Trophy rib tied up. A piece of history.

It’s beatiful isn’t it? I certainly don’t need convincing of that. I’ve been before quite recently, in fact I stood in that exact spot with my dog chatting to a guy with sea kayak. The chippy over the road wasn’t bad either! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Once we were at a table in the conservatory bit at the front of the Rising Sun on a rough night where the waves were going over the top of the Idle Rocks and hitting the glass where we were sitting.

Do love the sea.

When ever we’ve been in Cornwall and the weather has been bad we just go to the opposite coast, north or south.

Just seems the weather is very localised in Cornwall.

Saying that as above a spectacular storm near the coast is a real holiday memory maker.

Hopefully we will be in Scotland so taking the same gamble.

I'd deffo agree with that - very localised at times so good weather just a drive away.

And if your in the sea surfing, you can't get any wetter, so a little rain don't matter - in fact it clears the beach a bit!!

Good tip on the coast swap technique. As for surfing… let’s just say I’d feel bad for the seal rescue folk getting calls about a large mammal in distress. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Cornwall has many local microclimates. We have a place local to Fowey on the south coast and when the weather isn’t good just going north towards Newquay can be like day and night.

Newquay’s microclimate keeps the sky much clearer of clouds so generally a better risk for brighter weather. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

Saw that this year and assumed it was some kind of homebrew lashup. Why did they need a rub for the camel trophy?

We live on the Roseland, just a few minutes from St Mawes. So obviously agree with your choice of St Mawes as being outstanding!
Although you can never guarantee anything with the weather, we have always found May and June to be two of our favourite months. We’ve had some real belters in May for the past two years !
