Possible wheel ballance issue. Try changing the front wheels to the back and take for another run and see if anything changes.

Also when the wheels are off check to see if there is any obvious sign of a balance weight fallen off. If they are stuck on sometimes you’ll see the sticky residue where it was. Ride like you stole it!!

I had the same recently and had it fixed this week. The Swivel preload was shot and also needs a new bearing kit. Problem solved. It was also a good excuse to upgrade to the Gwyn Lewis drop arm kit and sumo bars |

Panhard rod bushes would be my starting point. I had a similar shake and did them before i attempted the swivels.
I used the superpro kit from gywn lewis |

Thanks for reply chaps.
I forgot to say I have had new tyres and balancing done on the front , it got slightly better but still is there. I was thinking bearing or front prop uj may be at fault but for both I can't understand why it only does it at that they speed, not all the time. In relation to swivel preload and panhard bushes, how do i Check this? Thanks, Roy 300tdi 90 1996. |

I let my independent deal with it. In a nut shell the front needs jacking up, wheels off, disconnect every thing attached to the front hub, use a fishing weight to make a steady pull on the hub to measure the resistance. Then you need various shims and in my case a bearing kit. It’s a lot of faff for me to do due to lack of space and not knowing which shims to buy in advance. Then you to check all track rod ends and replace in necessary or preventative and then do the tracking or arrange to take it to somewhere to be done. It was easier to drop the 90 off and collect it knowing everything was done and ready for the coming winter. And yes I did get the tyres balanced first as being the cheaper option and had replaced the Panhard bushes. |

Every vibration has a frequency, Harmonic Vibration is when frequencies coincide and the effect is multiplied (made worse in this case). Coincidentally, my front tyres make a slight rumble noise around 48 mph, but this may not have the same cause as your issue. At 96mph, I'd expect the noise to come back again |

You can see it moving if the bushes are worn (the panhard rod) if someone else turns the wheel with the vehicle on the ground. I just swapped mine out for the low cost of it and as far as I could see it hadn't been done for a while. The props vibrations are different (in my exp), I found you a lot more noise combined with the vibration. I could hear my UJ's complaining. |

Had a similar vibration on my TD5 between 35 and 45 despite balancing the KM3s. Just had a front end rebuild and the bushes were completly shot (as were several other rotating/moving parts listed below). All replaced and on the long test run yesterday, the vibration has gone.
List of replacement parts that might have contributed include: bushes front bearings Discs and pads Front CVs (cause of the job) dampers |

I'm going to give this a good look at this week. What's best way to check for a dodgy wheel bearing? And where can I get the shims needed to set end float on the half shaft? TIA, Roy 300tdi 90 1996. |

When you jack up the wheel, check for play by trying to rock the wheel in every direction. Then ask an assistant to press and hold the brake. If all play goes away with the brakes on, then you have play in the wheel bearings.
