Oil leak hunting
Started the fun game of oil leak hunting. Location inlet manifold side of the engine.
I know about the half moon.

The other leak gets oil onto the coolant pipes that run down from the fuel cooler.
Started with removing the alternator and replacing;

The short bit of rubber pipe from the alternator to the engine (Item 10 on the diagram - Geobloke mentioned this on his thread)

Also replaced the rubber hose for the brake vacuum line.

I ordered from Duckworths, a new banjo bolt and a pair of copper washers (Item 11 & 9) on the diagram. Not sure on the torque spec for the banjo bolt, but I don't see it being that tight.

But, surprisingly mine had no washers. Surprised



I took the chance to wipe down as much of the side of the engine and surrounding area as I could.
Part way through re-installing the alternator. More tomorrow and then a visit to the jet wash. 1999 Defender TD5 110

All back together. Cleaned and wiped down and then jet washed.
Time to start hunting. 1999 Defender TD5 110

After quick few miles around the main roads, I had a quick look and spotted a small leak from the front cam seal. - new one on order.

While hunting in the shed for something else I found the rear engine acoustic foam plastic panel thingy. I have reinstalled this but with some oil absorbent matting between the foam and then back of the cylinder head, hopefully this will catch some oil leaking from the rear and give me a fighting chance of checking for leaks.

On the plus side no oil appears to be escaping from the alternator Smile
Bad side, I spotted that one of the clips that holds the coolant pipes to a bracket below the manifold has snapped. Cables ties to the rescue. 1999 Defender TD5 110

There’s always ‘something else’ isn’t there?
But it’s all part of the so-called ‘fun’ and it keeps most of us out of trouble.

I’m sure you are narrowing it down John and will soon have the source identified and cured.

Yea, there is always something. I suspect most of it is from the rear of the engine. Time will tell. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Oil leak update. Still there.

Crawled underneath after a 380 mile trip and there was a small spot of oil on the underside of the alternator and on the triangle shaped bracket which I think is number 2 in the diagram below



I am hoping this is just old oil that found its way in the alternator over the period of the leaks that is now escaping.

I replaced the rocker gasket and added some Loctite sealant around the half moon area of the seal.

Also gave the rocker cover a good cleaning with brake cleaner and dried off with the air line.

Cleaned out the rocker cover to air intake pipe

Removed and checked the airbox to turbo pipe. The pipe from the turbo pulled off a lot easier than

I was expecting after undoing the jubilee clip. Retightened all the jubilee clips.

I did notice some old oil covering the intercooler pipe below the airbox to turbo pipe as well, and cleaned this off - might explain the sucking/induction noise I can hear on the passenger side when the flaps are open ? If the jubilee clips not tight enough?

Again, time to wait and see what shows up. 1999 Defender TD5 110

On my Disco 2 I have (in 230k miles or so) lost two alternators due to the vac pump leaking oil into the alternator. This leads to a build-up of gunge in the alternator and the gunge destroys the slip rings prematurely. Unfortunately it does not seem to be possible to buy slip ring kits for the TD5 alternator, so there is little that can be done but to replace it, together of course with the tiresome vac pump.

The TD5 vacuum pump is one of those things that seems a really good idea on paper but in practice is unfortunate, since the failure of a relatively cheap vacuum pump tends to wipe out a relatively expensive alternator.

Cheers BW. I would lean towards the oil pump is OK at the mo and it was just oil left over from previous leaks.....I think I still have 1 year warranty left.... 1999 Defender TD5 110

Rolling with laughter Of course Rolling with laughter Wonder how long it has been without sealing washers...

The cam shaft cover o-rings always flatten and leak. Best thing to do is sikaflex the cover into place... No more leaks. I do not usually suggest oodles of silicone but in the case of the cam shaft cover no harm can come of it.

As for the leak take a good look at the crank shaft seal, it can leak and flick up oil on to other components.

Well no washers has been a thing for a while. I got the 110 in 2009, the alternator failed about 5 years ago and I swapped it out for a new one (no washers then) and then I think it was last year or year before the alternator went again(no washers) but it wasn't until I looked at the parts diagram in your Miffy thread that I noticed a pair of washers.
I think in answer to the question, how long with no washers...Quite some years!

The old rocker gasket had gone hard.

What Sikaflex do you suggest for next time?

The front cam shaft seal had a minor oil smudge mark that I thought was a leak, so I ordered a new one.

But I did quite a few miles over the weekend and this smudge did'nt get worse - so at this moment in time, I am leaving this alone to see what gives.

As for the rear one, this is dry. The only leak at the rear is the half moon.

When I had the front crank pulley done, I got the oil seal swapped at the same time. I think there was some oil leaking from there as well and getting into the waft from the fan blades etc. 1999 Defender TD5 110

A few days on and I think I have done better than before. Seems to be less oil at the back of the head. I need to have a good look over it during daylight to make sure. 1999 Defender TD5 110
