Biggest differences in Apple vs Windows in relation to Office are the bits no home user needs. If you're just using email, word, excel, you won't notice the difference.

Don't let having office swing your decision too much.

However, if you want a touch screen with a proper laptop, it's Windows

Agree, my current HP Pavillion has a touch-screen (and indeed can be folded back on itself to act as a decent sized tablet) and it is massively useful when delivering engineering lectures to student remotely from home. It was a Godsend during COVID!

Hello All / Caterham

I've run my own design business for the last 20 years and worked on many IT set ups
running various design software. (Microstation, Auto Cad + numerous 3D Software).

The argument for years (with some truth to it) regarding the Apple V's Windows decission was based on simplicity (and therefore, the thoroughness) of design thinking.... I agree with this up to a point...
but this has always come at a price.

In our studio we have 9 PC's at 4 workstations all with multiple screens, a minimum of 2 and up to 4 per workstation... in the early days when design software was so expensive you effectively stuck you flag one side of the Apple V's PC argument and then kitted up to follow.

We chose Windows as we could get so much more processing power with the Hardware for the price.

We have a few Apple Products that have crept in, but their price (for what you get) still bugs me.

As for who we buy from, (in order of spend so far....) Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Apple. SKIP

I moved to Apple iMac back in 2010, its still going strong today - can't upgrade to latest version of O/S but that doesn't matter as its mainly used these days for browsing, MS Office and as it has a DVD drive, to upload DVDs & CDs to NAS box.
In 2015 I bought another iMac, which too is still working well and has the ability to be upgraded to latest O/S if I want, all I've done with it is upgraded memory and put a SSD drive in instead of hard disk one

I'm normally issued with a Windows laptop for work, as they are usually high-endish business models they are generally OK quality wise but its a complete pain when they have to update Windows every few weeks never mind the other apps being upgraded too

In 12 years of being a Mac user I've never had a virus or malware issue, despite not running any AV apps - I have Malware Bytes running which I got are from an employer but its never found anything in 7 years

For context I'm a certified Microsoft Windows Server engineer, been involved in MS Windows since Windows 286 and would never buy a windows desktop or laptop again ever.

that seems to be quite a strong and informed statement Eldoclear.

generally, there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to this.

my intuition says that if there really was a big advantage in having OS this would be reflected in the industry. in my 30+ years of employment its only ever been MS (or SUN) - seem to recall the international company I worked for had a few SUN machines and these were deemed to be the bees knees at the time - early 90s. ?

never any OS and they managed to build all sorts from the Birmingham Internation Convention Centre to the Berlin Velodrome?

Sun kit was tremendously well built and had a price to match.

Sun kit did have an O/S - it's called Solaris ( well it was, dunno if its changed name or been deleted ) it was Sun's version of Unix an again worked incredibly well - think Linux was the death knell of expensive versions of Unix, although in saying that AIX( IBM Unix) still survives

Unix rings a bell.

I do recall it being rather nice kit - a lot nicer than the compaq stuff that was the standard across the rest of the office.

didn't think I ever would but my hand has been forced and I've reluctantly ended up with an iPad.
and the fun begins. not to mention giving myself a heart attacked when I down loaded a free app and it says 'processing payment'

and the fun begins with trying to set up Outlook. its asking for my IMAP server etc.
don't even know if I have access to this - I seem to recall it just did it when setting up on pc/android?
I've tried to find the relevant info off Outlook on my pc but cant seem to find it - any suggestions please?

.....whats wrong with the good old pen, paper and a stamp

think it was circa '92 I worked on it simply as a platform for AutoCAD.
back in the days when life it simple (well alot simpler than it is now).

You'll find the account info you're looking for under "Tools" then "Sccounts"on the toolbar at top of page. This will tell you details on IMAP or POP server for your email

the only 'tools' i can find is under the top menu 'File'.
and under the option 'Tools' there are 3 options;
mailbox cleanup
empty deleted
clean up old

I must be looking in the wrong place I guess?
