There are two implementations of the detent mechanism, I have no idea why.
This is a TD5 box, with the detent ball and spring just behind the difflock switch. Click image to enlarge This is a TDCi box, with the detent ball and plunger fitted from below acting on a forward extension of the selector shaft. Click image to enlarge |

So on a Puma it is easy to get to from below. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I bet that is not the reason it was moved though, Land-Rover never changed anything just to make access easier!
I have no idea why it moved. Both the boxes in my post have the same ratios (the TD5 is a Disco2 box) and same internals, and the proximal detent doesn't interfere with the adaptor casing on a Puma. I can only assume that the later one is, for some reason, cheaper to make, although I don't see why this should be. I suppose it might simplify the machining of the casing. |

Yes, sure not to make our lives easier
On the Puma, the diff lock shaft still have the reduced diameter for the detent as in the earlier boxes detent location. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Thank you all,
so do you know if you can adjust the hardness of the insertion of the differential lock lever ? Giacomo |

It's not something that is usually considered adjustable, but you could probably replace the spring with a softer or harder one, or possibly not screw the plug in so far.

If you need to adjust the detent spring, then probably you have a problem somewhere else. I would check the mechanism from the lever to the selector shaft on the transfer case.
Lack of use can cause the shaft to bind. Easy to remove the plate holding the shaft by removing 3 screws. One of these screws is shown in the bottom left corner of Blackwolf's first picture. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

yes in fact when the lever is in H it takes very little to move it and it goes in N, it seems to me that it has not made the entire stroke to engage the short gears correctly...

There is a spring on the diff lock selector shafts which bias the force required to shift in one direction.
Not 100% sure, but I think the spring pushes towards the unlocked position. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Re reading your post, it looks like your problem is not in the diff lock (shifting the lever to the left) but in the range selection, H-N-L. That is a different shaft and different detent. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |
