Hi folks,
I'm currently (far in advance!) getting myself a little more prepped for next year's trip, so expect a lot of daft questions... #1. Looking to buy the 'Vibraction RB5' - Pyrenees East to West. They'll provide a gps file, but ask which format. I can find a squiggle on a contour line, on a mountainside, in the dark using an OS map, compass and stopwatch, but I'm an outright GPS newbie. I've heard of gpx files, so far so good, but that's as far as I go. Is it similar to word, .pdf , jpeg, GIF and the like? I'm happy to read stuff for myself if anyone would rather point to a link as opposed to typing a complicated reply. I have googled (and searched on here) but with little easy success so far. .gpx is the most common, what 'app' or device are you going to load it into?

thanks Camelman.
It will be a samsung galaxy android tablet, and I'll be linking that to an external GPS receiver. These are suggestions I did research on here before 'taking the plunge'. I'm now looking at the different apps - again, with suggestions found here: Locus; Gaia; Guru. This is where it gets complicated, and I'm sure each user, having taken the time to get to grips with their own app, would recommend that. However, if they'll all take gpx. files, then perhaps I don't need to bother any more. I just didn't really understand the question when asked 'which format?' Thanks Simon/Bear.
TBH I think I have my answer now. I’ll get the book and the files in GPX format. Bear - Did you write up your trip? I found stuff where you were planning it, asking similar questions to mine about sat nav, but then had to change plans because of … summer fires or something? Or have I got completely the wrong person? No it was me! I haven’t done my write up yet, had an issue with the iMac which took a couple of weeks for Apple to sort and I’ve been very busy since, actually you have just reminded me!
When you order your book as for all the amendments at the same time and just before you depart on the trip, because a few places had closed routes due to work and forest fires. 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |

Locus Maps is excellent. If you set up a free cloud Google Drive (gmail) account, store you GPX files in there you can then upload them easily from there into Locus Maps on your android tablet. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

+1 for Locus (which sounds a bit funny to a German ear as it's the same as Lokus )
You may get lost at first (in the app and all its settings, not out there in the real world ) But it's soo useful and efficient. I take my old and trusted Garmin with us as a fallback, but main devices are now a rugged Android phone and a tablet. GPX is fine. Dedicated formats may make it easier to import the data to a TomTom for example. Also if you buy data that use specific features only a certain device has, the brand-specific format maybe required. But that wont be the case here. Probably they're just using a conversion tool like GPSbabel. |

Thanks guys - I did some googling earlier on today - Locus (or Lokus - I had to look that up!) vs. Gaia.
One of the things that came up was that some said Gaia was better for route planning, due to having a desk top version - but on the other hand, it seemed that Locus had added this functionality, though it might need a 'premium' subscription..? For £24 / 12 months I could easily live with that if it's a good/convenient app to use 'on the ground'. This would probably only be for Europe, as I'm a really huge fan of OS mapping in the UK, and pay them an annual subscription too.
