REAR DIFF QUESTIONS AND......ANSWERS
I am waiting for my puma to be fixed next week.The brake vacum pump was spitting oil allover the place (I know about the recall) ,there was also a noise from the gear box when starting or stoping the engine unless you were pressing the clutch (they will change the whole lot) and finally a new rear diff.It was making a 'groooing' noise when you lifting off the accelerator between 90 to 110 kmh.
I am aware that there is a big problem with the Puma rear diffs that neither Land Rover has sorted yet out so I opted for an ARB (1400EUROS).The question is ,do someone knows what is causing the problem,is it the ring and pinion gears in which case ARB does no good at all or the casing with the spider gears-help me God.
Finally ,there is a product from Achcroft I believe, which applies a permanent pressure to the ring gear using two springs and a brass block.Has someone fitted one of these,does it helps ,it may be a solution to all us puma owners. NOT A TRANSIT

I had a 'grooooing' noise when coming of the accelerator at above 110km/h and at some lower speeds. LR diagnosed the problem as the diff but could not solve it, I took the vehicle to an independant drive train specialist and they diagnosed the problem as being the prop shaft. Replacing my prop shaft with a Td5 prop shaft confirmed the diagnosis, fitting my prop shaft to a demo Puma duplicated the noise. I am comvinced that at least some of the 'diff' problems are in fact prop shaft problems. The prop shaft makes a noise at the splines, there is a type of a bearing in there that was not used on the Td5 prop shaft that seems to be the cause of the problem.

When mine was refitted, after having the Td5 shaft fitted, it was greased properly and the prop shaft is a lot quiter.

The LR dealer have admitted that the prop shaft is noisy but do not seem to be interested in finding out why and fixing the problem, I was assured late last year that someone from LR SA would be contacting me early this year to resolve the problem, so far I have heard nothing.

A few years ago my 200 tdi had a coupling changed on the rear prop shaft. Afterwards I would get a rumbling noise at certain speeds or revs.It was because the prop shaft was refitted incorrectly.There is a small balance weight on the shaft and the shaft must be fitted a certain way. Maybe the Puma shaft needs to be balanced by just such a weight but was never designed with one?Just a thought. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Your propshaft sounds like it was a case of not being balanced properly, mine, and the others that make this noise, is balanced 100%. Balancing it has no effect.

Yep I know but they put it in writing so what can I say. You know diffs should not whine at 7000miles and i know that and probably my dog knows that but if they just stand there and say "I am a land rover area engineer and you are wrong" what do you say.

The area LR engineer is nothing to do with the guys that deal with these issues you know.

I am a lot happier since the prop shaft has been refitted(and greased properly I suspect), if it was as quiet as it is now when I bought the vehicle and I knew what the source of the noise was I would never have been so concerned in the first place.

I am quite content even if LR do not give me more feedback, I know that the vehicle is not going to break down becuase of the noise and the noise is realy not very intrusive anymore and happens only at very specific driving conditions, I am happy to consider it normal for a Defender.

The only problem for me is the lack of LR's ability to quickly and effectively diagnose and explain the source of the noise in first place causing me unesecary concern and frustration.

Must be a lot of the yellow stuff in Solihull that they are burying their heads in. I'm convinced there are a number of issues with the Puma transmission that LR are not coming clean about. Presumably in the hope that the issues will pass through the warranty period with some good old fobbing-off. It's annoying because from what you read on this, and various other forums, the dealers want to help but are limited because of LR and payment for unauthorized warranty repairs. Oh, and by the way, if any of you out there hear a loud clunk, don't worry, it's only the backlash in my transmission.

Diff Pegging is what you are talking about in the opening post.

Alot of the guys running ARBs on the challenge scene run pegged 4.11 diffs, its not normally so much of an issue with the 3.54s (same as PUMA) as they are thicker and flex less.

If the diff rumble is the C&P then pegging would resolve it. if its the diff centre then the ARB will solve it.

the Crown wheels could be flexing due to the extra torque and how it is delivered to the diffs of the PUMA over a td5 but then my chipped TD5 never suffered. Cheers
