It's perfectly doable. Search Ebay or Amazon for 'automatic headlamp sensor' and you'll get loads of results, mostly cheap stuff made in China which might be perfectly OK or might set fire to your Defender...
I'd have slightly more confidence if companies like PoleVolt or Vehicle Wiring Products sold them as they have a reputation for quality and wouldn't stake their reputation on substandard stuff. I do wonder how you'd get on with an MOT though, I guess if the system, has a simple override then it would be fine. MOT testers don't like having to hunt around trying to work out why things don't work like nature intended. The last guy who MOTd my 110 got proper stroppy that I'd moved the headlight switch to the other side of the steering column...it wasn't like I'd hidden it in the cubby box... Very smart 90 by the way, love them in silver. Last edited by Penfold_6290 on 6th Sep 2022 9:42pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Yep but it’s a bit of work. I suspect you want to have daytime running lights rather than dipped headlights? I use my LED side lights as daytime running lights. Figured out how to switch them on using a relay on ignition. Rear lights only come on too when switch is set or side lights. I suspect you can do exactly the same with dipped headlights. What are you actually wanting to achieve?

Wanting it to be like a modern setup , in that during the day the daytime running lights are on , then when it gets dark the headlights come on themselves .
I have ordered a new front bumper with DRL’s in , and plan to change headlights too modern ones eventually |

Doesn't the fact that it's dark in front of the vehicle and you can't see where you're going remind you to turn them on?

Observations of modern road traffic suggest that you are far from alone with this, and I think the fact that modern dash panels are always illuminated is a major contributor. In my Defender (original type) the dash is completely unlit with the lights off and it is usually my inability to see the instrument panel at dusk which triggers me to turn on the sidelights.
You can always see a modern dash and it doesn't change when the sidelights are on. |

When did the Puma get the audible lights left on warning? With the 2.2? My 08 didn’t have it, pretty sure the 11 plate didn’t either, but 15 plate did have it (same as the low fuel warning chime)

This came up recently and I think it's only the last year of production. My 13MY doesn't have it.
It's ironic really as I've always thought that placing the switch directly next to the key was a bit of genius minimalist design as it's almost impossible to turn off the ignition without noticing that the switch is on. My 14 plate 110 has the audible warning, although I think it's a 2015MY car when you look up the VIN
