Flippin’ 3 Amigos
Yes I’ve got the Defender equivalent of the 3 Amigos.

Noticed a chafed wire to my NSR abs sensor when working on something else.

Said lights came on whilst out on the road. When I returned I replaced the sensor and wiring as I had spares.

Lights went off for day a couple of hundred miles (job well done I thought…) and then…they returned.

I read that it might be a faulty abs solenoid so I bought a WABCO replacement. I was quite (very) pleased with myself for replacing it in situ through the wing vent aperture (keyhole surgeon by trade).

The lights remain - but it did occur to me that I may have to have the fault reset?

I’m hoping it’s not the big expensive abs block replacement so I’m desperately looking for simpler solutions.

I’m now looking at my recently replaced abs sensor - does it look far enough in to you?

Cheers,

Will

Really not sure how…

But those 3 Amigos are no longer with us.

Spent a bit of time testing and checking all the fuses, wiring, relays, connectors etc. on the ABS circuit and applied switch/contact cleaner along the way.

That ‘might’ have done it OR the new sensor OR the new WABCO modulator valve switch thingy.

Who knows?

Not really that reassured and they may be back! Whistle

Might have been as simple as a dirty fuse ! Glad it's resolved !

Thanks Mo - let’s hope so.

The problem with me ‘going over’ so many potential sources of the issue is that I can’t actually accurately identify what it is/was that caused the problem.

Equally I don’t really know whether I’ve cured it Rolling Eyes

At least at the moment, it’s definitely less cramped in the driving seat with those three uninvited guests gone Rolling with laughter

Well the law of sods…

Had a great longish period without the 3 amigos.

It was the MOT last week…and yes you’ve guessed it…failed because of the 3 amigos (which weren’t illuminated before or at the point of delivery to the MOT station). Sod’s Law?

The garage only have basic diagnostic equipment so couldn’t detect a specific fault. They said the brakes were working fine.

I haven’t got any diagnostic equipment nor fault reader so for the first time during my ownership, I will need to rely on a local independent.

Sadly the local independent garage that has been recommended hasn’t got back to me…

I was going to ask if there’s anyone local to me (West Lancs) with a Nanocom or similar who could help but the reality is it looks like it could be the ABS unit ££££££££

Just a thought - is it possible that when I’ve bled the brakes to replace the calipers I should have had the ABS ‘primed’ for want if a better word? I’m desperately looking for faults other than a completely knackered ABS unit.

If it is the unit, then I’m sadly going to have to mothball my Defender until funds allow me to sort it.

Please note that all the ABS sensors are new and I’ve replaced the shuttle valve thingy.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Sicastle - that’d be really helpful.

I’m not far away from Southport.

I’ll PM you.

Thanks,

Will

Have you changed the shuttle valve switches in ABS modulator? If yes, did you made bypass of the internall connector? Most of time, the problem is not in the switches and connector on their plastic holder, but in the connector on the opposite side, in the ABS modulator body. Simple bypass is the easiest solution. This is typical problem of ABS in Discovery 2. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Hi MadTom,
Thanks for the input.

I’m afraid I only replaced the plastic element that fixes to the ABS module with 3 Allen head bolts.

It was an actual pig of a job as I had to do it all via the side vent, and even then I could only just get my Allen key in.

The one I removed looked intact so maybe I could carry out the bypass on that and then take a deep breath and change it back. For the price, it may be worth me buying another new one and carrying out the mod.

Sicastle has offered to help with diagnostics, so wondered if the fault you describe would show up and if so what would it read as?

Thanks again,

Will

Thanks to Sicastle71 for lending a hand and bringing along his Nanocom 👍

Really nice Landy Si👍

An interesting afternoon where we also put some (not all) of the world to rights.

Alas we didn’t resolve the issue today as no faults were displayed…

We did identify that the ABS pump motor is deceased - which is good to know but worrying in terms of £££££

We also discovered another fault that is related but sadly not the cause.

Looks like I need a new ABS unit.

Anyone replaced theirs themselves?

Can it be done ‘from above’ without removing the wing?

Cheers,

Will

I’ve had mine out and back in but I took the wing off. It takes longer, but I liked having proper access. I replaced the shuttle valve switch, I didn’t do the bypass as I didn’t know at the time, but it’s been fine since.

BTW, I know you’re sorted now, but I’m in East Lancs with a Nanocom if you ever need. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Thanks for the info and kind offer Bluest 👍

Did you replace the whole ABS unit or take it out just to replace the shuttle valve switch on the bottom?

My pump motor has failed but I understand you can’t simply replace that - a new ABS block is required £££££

Did you disconnect the unions/pipes and have to re-bleed? If so, was it difficult?

Cheers,

Will
