Someone somewhere will always find issues with everything in life.
I’m going on a cruise from Southampton later this week, thankfully we’re not having to deal with the faff of flying but planes must be similar to ships if not worse when you think of headcount v miles etc. I think an exploding population is the real reason why the World is struggling Lets keep things real and continue burning our Diesel for now Ride like you stole it!! I’ve been told by friends up in Orkney and Shetland that there is so much shop lifting when a passenger ship docks in ports up there that many of the “tourist” shops now close on cruise ship days……..
Having spent my entire working life working on general cargo and container ships (many with 10 passengers, which was nice) I couldn’t imagine anything worse than being on one of those huge ships with so many passengers on them. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! |

The Venetians have a love hate relationship with cruise ships. The City relies on tourism but there is a real hatred of their size and how they swamp the city for the few hours they in port.
I believe the Venetians will now tax tourists who are only day trippers. I must admit that when we were there, it was like a total eclipse of the sun when a cruise ship passed by! |

Rashers you are correct. The Tourist Director for Venice City was on TV last week saying that hundreds of cruise ship tourists pour off their boats, wander around the streets, refusing to buy a beer, ice cream or coffee because it's too expensive. They bring their own packed lunches from the ship - all they do is deposit their litter on the streets, spend no money in local shops and then leave after a few hours. Venice has hundreds os sights but the worst one is seeing a giant cruise ship sailing in the lagoon at the entrance to the Grand Canal. Defender 90XS SW

It’s because they only look as far as St Marks Square
The price of a coffee there is enough to make David Beckham draw breath through his clenched teeth It was said that the national sport in England is Football. The national sport in India is Cricket. The national sport of Venetians is ripping tourists off It’s a shame as if you dig a bit deeper into Venice, away from the touristy bits, the City comes alive (in my opinion ) and is far more affordable. I expect the Cruise Ship visitors don’t have the luxury of time and are probably scared they will get lost and not get back to the ship. They probably cling round St Marks and The Doges Palace and never venture far from safety. |

Sorry but this is nonsense, firstly cruise ships don’t supply passengers pack lunch to go ashore and to say passengers don’t buy a beer or similar… most actually prefer to buy drinks at the destination which even if expensive can be much better value than buying one on the ship and a local drink at the destination is one of the attractions. There are always exceptions but after doing 18 cruises I think I can talk from experience. If ports don’t want to welcome several thousand guests it is simply their loss! They are lucky to be financially secure enough to make that decision, financial security that cruisers have contributed to historically…. Ride like you stole it!! It’s not nonsense. You are correct that many people do spend money, but with the cost of Venice and a good percentage of cruise ships including food as part of the cost of your holiday, you can understand that many will not buy food. Their spend will be so much less than a person who stays in the City putting money into their economy. This is probably why they are introducing the tax? I agree that if they hate the cruise ships so much, why do they just not ban the ships from their port?
As I said previously, it is a very love hate relationship the Venetians have. |

That’s not what the main part your thread says that I was contesting!
Food in plenty is part of the cruise package but only if dining on the ship. A good breakfast can take you through to dinner so unless something ashore is tempting enough unfortunately that’s how it is. Venice is so busy that trying to get a table when time is a limiting factor can be difficult, so the day does need planning. I’m in favour of banning big ships, I don’t understand why they can’t tender in like they do at many other destinations Ride like you stole it!! Another thing they don’t tell you about is the humongous docking fees paid by cruise liners per hour, they also have a per person tax in addition to this so before any passenger has stepped foot off the ship the local economy has had tens of thousands off the cruise liner. Ride like you stole it!!
