I have an Ifor Williams HB511 horse trailer insured with Ecclesiastical Insurance through South Essex Insurance brokers at a cost of £132.
https://www.seib.co.uk/ I have breakdown cover with Equine Rescue Services. It covers breakdown for the trailer and also covers breakdown for the defender. It also covers the safe transportation of your horse or horses in the case of a breakdown. https://www.equinerescue.co.uk/?gclid=EAIa...gIpNPD_BwE Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

HB511 is three years old now, had it from new and had no problems and is used every other week for transporting a 16.3hh dressage horse to competitions. Also used by my wife to transport her driving donkeys.
Fuel consumption with trailer is about 21mpg (Puma 2.2) Click image to enlarge Defender 90XS SW Mini Countryman Cooper S Morgan Plus 8 |

I've got my flatbed insured with Shield insurance under their trailer policy. Never claimed, but it's hassle free arranging it. I think it's about £130 a year, when I was shopping around all the trailer policies were roughly the same I think - literally like £5 difference or something.
Can't help with the horse breakdown insurance - isn't it covered by general equine insurance? I mean as callous as it sounds, presumably you can insure a horse against injury, theft, third party liability etc much like any property or pets. Perhaps it covers transportation in the event of a vehicle breakdown too? As for fuel consumption - Defenders will pull just about anything, but doing so economically, not so much. All cars tend to drink a LOT more than usual when you lob a caravan or heavy trailer on the back of them. It's not just the weight and air resistance, you'll tend to slow down a lot more and much sooner for the bends - especially with a horse on board, so it then uses more fuel to get back up to speed again. |

I've never considered locking the box ramp, as it sits empty. I'd rather a potential thief open the door to look inside than break in to see it is empty.
PS. the trailer itself has security to deter theft.
