My Series IIA "Jemima"
It seems I had glossed over this section and as she has been sat doing nowt for ten+ years it seemed trivial to post the life of a static lump of scrap. Laughing

Soo here is my 1971 Series IIA SWB 2.25 petrol. Affectionally known as Jemima (The puddle duck) as for when I first got her I kicked the rear step off the crossmember as taking a good chunk of chassis with it. She clearly has been swimming in a past life so that's the Etymology of her name.

late 2003 and as a fresh faced 17 year old my old man get's approached one day in the village and being known as a land rover man get's asked about taking on another landy.

This landy was from a divorcee who's Ex had left it festering in what was now her garden for many a year. So a deal was done and the V5 signed over it was liberated.

Now the fun starts..

Living in a semi detatched with no garage let alone off street parking has it's challanges let alone to rebuild rotten series.

Step in a friend of my fathers who ran a small independent garage from his home. So roll on my 18th birthday and shortly after I passed my test I could progress So I took it to bits there

When my father wasn't using his 90 (pictured) I would borrow it and become proficient in angle grinding. She was super rusty the bulkhead fell to bits and the chassis had some serious rust. Rear 1/4, Front dumb irons, outriggers, all rusty. What I couldn't weld I got my dad's friend to do.

Time rolled on I can't remember how long but it did. I was seriously cash strapped so it was a super budget build. I found a SH bulkhead and rebuilt it in the back garden. (the neighbours loved me)

I finally got the axles cleaned up and painted and prayed that they were ok inside as apart from brakes and bearings I didn't touch them.

The leaf springs were wire brushed and coated in oil they would have to do. The engine and box was just left in one lump. It would have to do and again fingers crossed it was ok.

I had then found a home closer to home, It was primitive but progress could be made. There was no door and no lighting and progress was slow

The body work came along and as the bargain basement continued I forfeited a paint job for a brand new autosparks loom as I didn't fancy a bonfire no matter how well presented it would of been.

By early 2006 I had a runner, various adventures followed like the one time I sunk it in a stream, or went laning alone.

I won the leaf spring class in the twist off at the 2007 LRW show

Driven it to manby for the 2007 ALRC national

Or Coney green near Stourbridge for the Series 2 club national rally

It was in this early time I found out with help of the Rumsey brothers that maybe she wasn't just a normal IIA that had been mucked about with. There was a tidy centre bulkhead removal and signs on the wings and tub of badges been removed and various holes in the rear tub that had been painted.
I will add at this time the concept of land rover campers was purely either a LWB carawagon or a Dormobile. More digging of archive material brought to light a somewhat forgotten side to Searles of sunbury limited, The Searle Safari.
Evidence with some supposition meant that I had a not so typical safari on my hands. Most of searles work was export or by vehicles from their area. If you look at the registrations they are TP or similar. Mine is on a cornish registration marque. So I can only assume a private vehicle brought it to have the work done.

It was 2007 that near London a set of seat cushions came up for sale. A friend brought them up for me at the LRW show IIRC and they came with a few parts of the mahogany sliders too.

So what happend?

Well I used her as daily transport, Petrol got expensive, a head gasket went, I brought a 1994 (200 style) V8I discovery and the series got used less. It came to 2011 when using the rock slider to change the tyres for the MOT the fuel tank outrigger started to split. This was sadly time to moth ball her with the view of I'll fix her next year.

Well...

I had the disco, Changed it's engine after it went pop, Ran it some more, It begain to rust (Like they Do)

I brought an Early V8 90 project and changed it to 3.9 V8 Auto that went to 4.2 after the 3.9 went pop and ran that,

then In late 2014 land rover announced the end of defender production for the 90 Went and in early 2015 I brought a ex demo 110 USW. Now this meant I still couldn't afford to rebuild my baby and Time wound on.

In 2016 I brought a richard's chassis with the view of time to get her on the road.. well.. I got made redundant and went to a much lower paid job and only just scraped together the cash each month to pay for the 110.

Well last week my storage was lost and I've found her a new home. It is under a roof (A first for me, as everything so far has been alfresco) So the time has come for Rebuild No2.

Alongside the rest of my stuff I decided to turn it into a restoration Blog/Vlog so over to Youtube

Part one

Part Two

Part three

By then I had got to rolling chassis stage and with the cleaned up engine and box it came together couple weeks ago

and most recent is just working on the brake lines until the cylinder head comes back from having some TLC

Ok coming up to date.

Apologies for the lack of updates. It's been an rollercoaster of a time with life doing it's best to get in the way.

so in some form of chronological order:

<<Part 4 on YT about pulling and stripping the Cyl head.

<< Part 5 on YT getting the engine and trans back in the rolling chassis.

<<Part 6 on YT will then pick up at that point

It will also cover this stage of the build

And the ensuring build up to

The complete item.

I've been using her a few times when the roads were dry and it has been relative trouble free miles. I've done an oil and filter change and retorqued some bolts but elsewise it's all good.

Now bring on the summer Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest
