How Its something i never thought off before!!How should mot inspectors be testing the brakes without using the rolling road and whapping on the handbrake? Any mot folk on here to tell us how they are supposed to do it?

I’m not a tester, but they should do a road test and use a Tapley meter. Steve |

Aye, lots of people say you shouldn't do a defender on the rollers but if these guys hadn't done the roller test then they wouldn't have really noticed the near side didn't register any braking. 3 Landrovers

A vehicle with selectable 4WD (eg series LR) can be roller tested, a full-time 4WD needs a two-axle roller test rig or road test with a decellerometer. If roller testing, the handbrake can be tested; if road testing the effectiveness of the handbrake should be assessed with the vehicle stationary.

What damage are you expecting?
I can’t understand the problem apart from a tester who doesn’t understand |

Surely all they've registered is that you have an open rear diff (like virtually every Land Rover)? That's not a fault - it's just a consequence of the design and there's no need pull anything Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? My thoughts exactly.
It is just showing how a diff works. |

The only damage is to your wallet and their reputation. The penny cannot have dropped since they haven't rescinded their stupidity (and it can't fail on the basis that something it doesn't have isn't working, and it doesn't have a "nearside handbrake"). What do you/they actually think is happening, and why do you think anything is damaged (and what good is pulling halfshaft)? I suggest that you don't waste your time, take it somewhere competent for the MoT and when it passes ask for a refund from the incompetent tester. Alternatively you could tell him that your vehicle is special since it has a handbrake that works on all four wheels, and the lack of a nearside handbrake is because that on is on the front. Watch him mentally process that! |

In their defense if you jack up the right rear wheel, the handbrake on the left rear wheel will fail. Maybe they were testing per wheel and did not notice the other wheel spinning. I agree pulling the half shaft does not make too much sense at this point

Thinking someone needs a lesson on the difference between a hand brake and a transmission brake... |

So,
Both rears jacked clear of ground Handbrake ON Spin either wheel and the other contra rotates, prop static. Handbrake OFF Spin either wheel and the other contra rotates, prop rotates. Handbrake ON, you can not rotate the wheels simultaneously in the same direction Handbrake OFF, you can rotate the wheels simultaneously in the same direction. With a single wheel jacked clear Handbrake ON wheel and prop dont rotate Handbrake OFF wheel and prop rotate. Do I have something wrong in my head here or is that working perfectly normally ? If so, then whats up with the MOT test they failed, Agh, hopefully someone can set my addled brain straight Cheers gang Gary 3 Landrovers |

All of that is perfectly normal. What's wrong with the MOT test is that they've tested it on rollers and don't understand how a transmission brake or differential works. Darren

As above, perfectly normal. The MOT tester doesn't know how a transmission brake works. It is their failure not your Defenders.

Well, Thanks all. Much appreciated even if it exposed my lack of knowledge or at least confidence in what I thought i knew. 3 Landrovers
