285/75R16 on Boost Alloys on a 110
Hi All,
I'm new to the forum and I have my first question, I have plans in the future to fit BF Goodrich ko2 285/75R16 to my 110 defender with boost alloys.
I don't really want to run spacers mainly due to the cost and for the paints sake on gravel roads and I'm wondering if this is at all possible? My biggest concern is the rear spring perches catching the tyres, my current tyres that came with the landy are falkon landair traction 265/70R16 (way to small for a 110) and they ever so slightly touch the rear spring perches when its flexed out.
I'm not concerned with a rubbish turning circle, it was never going to be good anyways.
Has anybody fitted the above tyres to boost alloys on a defender 110 with out spacers? If so did it work? and if so, how badly did it catch on the rear perches?
I know on a 90 its fine as they have different rear spring perches.

Boost alloys are 7" wide and BFG state minimum rim width of 7.5" for a 285 tyre so I wouldn't fit personally although i know some do.

Not sure why you want 285 width tyres without spacers, the turning will be horrendous - not bad! if you dont want spacers I would go with either a 265/75 or a 255/85 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

The main reason is cost here in SA Shocked , for a good imported set you looking at a good amount of rands. There are people that can make them for you locally but as far as I’m aware those are not hub-centric which is what you need for the boost wheels. Also I really don’t want stones flicking up onto the body more than it does even with the front flaps.

I did consider the 255/85 option but the only tyre available here is BF Goodrich KM3 also stupidly priced and I do a lot of highway km, my brother has mud terrains on his 90 and it’s way to noisy for the long drives we do. Very Happy

When I bought my 110 it was fitted with 285/75 Kumho KL71 tyres on Boosts. It looked good but was horrible to live with, and it wasn't unusual to have to do a shunt to get out at a junction the turning circle was so bad. It was necessary to plan your position on the road as you approached corners and junctions in order to get round them especially on narrow or winding roads (of which I drive a lot), it really was very tedious.

In short order I fitted 30mm Rakeway spacers, which solved the turning-circle problem perfectly, but created another one instead, namely that fact that the outside of the vehicle (and the inside if the windows were even a crack open) became plastered in filth and mud. After a while being unable to open the doors without getting filthy because of the clods of mud on the handles lost its novelty, as did having to keep the windows fully shut when off road.

It was a delight to change to 255/85 BFGs, replace the Boosts-plus-spacers with Blindos, and finally have the perfect size for the vehicle and the best of both worlds!

I really cannot conceive of any circumstance when I would consider going back to 285s.

If not going for 255/85 km3’s which as you see is the go to tyre if you want to fill the arches with a very well behaved MT then I would look to see the price and availability of 265/75 Goodyear wrangler duratrac tyres. They are an AT tyre but look nearly as aggressive as an MT, quiet on the road, good in mud and snow and do last.
Mine are on sawtooth rims , have covered 60k miles, have about 8plus mm left and no cracks etc after 8.5 years.

The issue Is sawtooths have a +22mm offset and boosts a +33 so your rims are 11mm more inboard . So still less turning circle than with a 255.
