What Tires are on the classic Land Rover 110 ? (pics inside)
Hello all, new here but certainly not new to Defenders

This question is a bit Odd, but I would be glad to know which tires are on the 110, as seen on queen's car and at Land Rover classic restoration. I would like to consider it for my 2012 110 puma, currently rolling on BF A/T, standard steel wheel (white)

please see pics below

thanks!

They look like the tread on Avon Traction Mileage but they are cross ply tyres which were original spec on series landrovers.
I’ll be interested to see what tyres they are.

which aren't seems to be available, only as used (maybe from former army defenders which were sold for parts)

the pic in the workshop looks more like the Avon

They look to me like the original 7.50x16 Avon Ranger, which for many years was standard fit on S3 LWB vehicles. The Ranger was superseded many years ago by the Rangemaster which had a different tread pattern. As far as I know the Ranger has been out of production for at least 30 years.

It is possible that those are the original tyres on HM's Landrover, they would have been standard fitment for an "A" prefix vehicle I think, although the Rangemaster was muscling in around that time. Certainly they were still widely available then.

I can't find any online pictures of the Ranger but I used to run 7.50 Rangers on some of my Series Ones so probably have pictures. The Avon TM (Traction Mileage) was the standard for 6.00x16.on SWB vehicles, the Ranger was standard for 7.50x16 on LWB.

I understand, so looks like its Avon tires, when an exception of olimpic on the spare at one time

Thanks! 7.5 R 16 is actually an original size on my puma so this can happen, not sure about the road ride quality though

BTW, what tires came with the puma when it was new?

Thanks!

I think a lot of commercial pumas came with 7.50 x 16 Michelin XZL on wolf rims.

Is it purely for looks?

They were awful tyres when they were new, let alone decades old. Fine back in the day or on an old series that potters about but I wouldn’t put them on a modern vehicle. Far better tread patterns around nowadays.

That said, there might be someone making remoulds if you really like the look. Don’t expect it to drive nicely at Tdci speeds though Very Happy

The continental is reasonable

the wolf rims (with the holes) came on the HD models (double springs at the rear). I got the classic white ones, I am a "purist" and looking for the looks as well as off road performance, the Avon rangemaster are new tires, I can see on the website?

I do drive highway as well so I will not go with 30 YO anyway Smile

Both my 130 and 110 came from the factory with 7.50 Michelin XZL’s fitted.
I now run 225/85 Goodyear Wrangler MTR on the 130 but the 110 is sill on XZL’s

The Michelin XZL is the successor to the near-legendary Michelin XCL which was used on nearly all Camel Trophy Landrover vehicles in a 7.50x16 size.

The XZL (and indeed its predecessor the XCL) is an excellent general purpose off-road biased tyre for those from the old school who prefer narrow tyres to wide tyres (a very sensible and intelligent view but that debate is not what this thread is about). It is not, however, a sensible choice for a vehicle which is used mainly on-road, unless the off-road portion is quite extreme. Personally I would not recommend either the XCL or the XZL for anyone who doesn't need them, or who is unaccustomed to the road manners of off-road tyres, or who thinks a Defender can or should be driven like an "SUV".

My SI 86" has been running on 7.50x16 XCLs for the last 25 years, they are OK on the road, epic off the road, but unidirectional which means either two spares or your spare will have a 50% chance of being the wrong orientation.

My Defender runs usually on BFG KM3s in 255/85x16 but on the rare occasions when heavy snow is forecast I change to a set of 7.50x16 Michelin XZL for two reasons. Firstly, whilst the KM3 is a formidable tyre under almost every condition, one of the very few exceptions is in snow where its performance can be startling and not in a good way and the XZL is significantly better in snow, and secondly because I cannot fit tyre chains on the 255s without running a very severe risk of ripping bits of bodywork off, whereas I can fit chains to the 7.50s.

The great majority of Defender left the factory with much more road-biased tyres, since by the Defender era that is what the majority of owners needed. The "hardcore" XZL was always just an option.

If you means the Rangemaster, nothing like as good as a more modern tyre (noting that the Rangemaster has evolved).

If you mean the XZL, see my post above.
